Usually the question is 77 grainers through my 1x9??????

I know how that does, but have not personally run 55's through a 1x7.

Is it irratic?

No, they work just fine. Do a search here, the subject has been treated many times in the past.

I once own a Colt Pre-Ban 20" A2 with 1/7. It was one of the most accurate rifles I have ever owned and I shot almost exclusively 55gr surplus ball. I later changed the barrel out to an M4 profile for the look but honestly wish I would have kept it the full 20". It was definately a paper punching SOB.

In basic training we shot mixed M193 and M855. Mixed as in a random mix in each magazine. No problems.

For anyone that has back issues of Rifle magazine there is a great article on the accuracy of 1:7" twist barrels using lighter bullets in the July-August 1988 issue.

"Results of tests in the .223 and .22-250: The seven-inch Twist is Accurate."
