Quoted: Bigbore, would you expand on why you recommend SS? I always heard the accuracy deteriorates once it heats up and that it's easier to damage them. Is this one of those things that has been blown out of proportion?

Yes, SS from my experience will begin to string when it gets hot, but not enough to matter under most conditions.
I had a medium weight 16" SS barrel I was toying with a couple years ago. I would shoot for groups as fast as I could and still get "good" groups, but after 2 mags these barrels would not hold MOA at 100yds.
Fort Custer opens up its pop-up qual course to the MRPA a couple times a year for fun matches. My friend and I took uppers with these 16" SS barrels.
Pop-up targets are the plastic green guys about 3' high that fall down when they are hit, or fall on their own after X amount of time if you miss. There are I believe 20 targets at random distances from 50-300yds, there are 40 exposures that you have to watch for. The 50yd may pop up, and the next can be the 50 again, or the 275yds, etc..
Its for fun, so we were each allowed 2, 30rd mags, loaded to capacity and blasted away at each target until it went down. If you dont know how hot that is, run 60rds through your rifle and grab the barrel.
When the scores were announced, I had hit 38 of 40, and my friend hit all 40. The ammo requirement was 55gr ball.
So, blasting away with a hot SS barrel, stinging the shots, we were able to do "good enough".
If you want to shoot match ammo, slowly at a target the SS barrel is great. If you want to blast away at threats(if your blasting you're not aiming as much) the hot SS barrel is plenty good enough to hit a threat with 55gr ball at 300yds.
Take from that what you want, if it makes any sense to you.
