I've read this before on here somewhere and did a search but it came up "zilch". What is the proper way to measure an attached barrel? Through the inside with bolt closed? To the end of flash hider or to the nut on the flash hider? Also when a manufacture states for example, it has a 16" barrel, or they referring to the complete barrel WITH flash hider or before the flash hider? |

Close the bolt, drop a cleaning rod down the bore till it contacts the bolt, mark the rod, pull it out, and measure. If the flash hider is permanently attached, mark and measure to the end of that. If the flash hider is not permanently attached then it doesn't count as part of the overall barrel length and you should measure only to the actual end of the barrel (in this case you will probably have to unscrew the flash hider to get to the muzzle if you need to do this measurement with precision). In general, the overall length as far as the law is concerned includes the barrel and any permanently attached muzzle device. As for the manufacturers' specifications, if you are buying just a barrel then in all likelihood no flash hider is included and they are specifying the length of the barrel alone. If you are buying a complete upper with a flash hider already installed and it isn't clear from the seller's description then you really need to ask the seller to be sure. |
