| Where do I find one or close to it? I have an upper off an M16 and looking for an original looking lower. SP1 would do fine. I'm watching for a used one. Does anyone sell new A1's? Thanks Joe |
Me. Understand. If you're like me and want to do the job w/only hand tools, you're probably looking at weeks of filing. polishing and finishing. I don't have a machine shop, nor the skill to use anything other than a drill press anyway, so it's an hour or so of filing 4 or 5 nights a week, and maybe part of a weekend day. Since I don't own a digital camera, I can't post any pics of the completed piece yet; but have committed myself to beg, borrow, or steal one after I finish the current project; which will almost certainly be in early 2006. BTW; for anyone contemplating such a project, who is going to acquire a new lower to start with; I strongly recommend getting any of the lowers made made by Continental. That would include Rock River, Century, Stag, and ??. Basically, if the serial no. starts with "CM" it;'s a Conti piece. My A1 project was with a Rock River lower, and was much less of a hassle than the DPMS unit I'm currently hacking on. Things like corner chamfers, front wall finish, and such are making this second project even more of a tussle than the first one was. ![]() I empathize with anyone who wants the lower under his early type upper to "look right". But at least for the moment, it appears to be a do it yourself job. |

A1s aren't slabsides, A1's are reinforced descriptions and pics are here |
No pics at the moment, since my only camera is a stone age Nikon from the PX a million years ago. As I posted in my first note, I'll wait 'til the early AF clone lower is finished, then figure out a way to get postable pices, and take some. Of course I'll have to go over to General Discussion and find out how to post pictures on the internet. I really am a total idiot on these things. Guess I spent too much time learning about firearms and shortwave radio when I was younger. My knowledge a/b shortwave and ham radio is now totally obsolete and useless, and sometimes I feel the my knowledge of firearms is getting that way. Maybe that's why I gravitate tho the early types of ARs, Spend much more time shooting the A1 and XM177E2 clones than the M16A2 and M4geries I've got ![]() And of course, Tweak is right. The only "slabside" LOWERS are the early experimental types and the Colt SP1s and 2s. |
Yes, this is correct about the slab sides. I have an upper off a Colt model 604. This should have either partial or full fence without the A2 reinforcements. I think I'll build my own and have some questions for BIY forum now. Thanks for any comments or help on this, Joe |
