HI All, newbie collector needs a little help on rec'r markings.  My dealer has a pre-ban Colt AR15A2. bird cage, bayo lug, no raised fence on the mag button. Colt marked 1-7 bbl.  However, on the rec'r the serial number starts with SP, not MH.  We took the handguards off and the bbl. is definitely the big heavy type.  What is the difference between and HBAR marked with SP and one whose serial number starts with MH.  Thanks for the help.

HBAR is just that heavy barrel, I'm guessing the SP would denote gov't profile. It sounds like this rifle was modified at one point. Usually a tell tale sign that a rifle was a post ban would be a Birdcage with no bayo-lug. As soon as the AWB ended many barrels were threaded with in the next few days and did without switching the FSB.

The HBAR model that you are asking about sounds like my former Colt AR-15A2 HBAR Sporter which I bought new back in '86.

I got the early model with all the A2 features except no mag fence.

HBARs with the SP prefix like mine are marked "AR-15A2 HBAR SPORTER" and the MH models are usually marked "SPORTER MATCH HBAR".

Here are some references on markings and serial numbers.
