Today I met a retired marine drill sargent that thought my bushy was a hammer, shovel, and a tire chuck.  He was very rough with it, He told me that besides cosmetic damge their is no real worry about harming the firearm. I have heard this many times, How true is that statement.
P.S.  I dont care that he smacked it around, I learned a lot from him.
Thanks

other than breaking things they should be fine, i would be careful about smacking them around with a round chambered

When I was in boot camp at Parris Island, those rifles took some serious abuse and still functioned fine. I've seen 'em hit the deck hard many times. Sometimes a Drill instructor would
snatch one and just throw it across the squadbay for whatever reason, usually for screwing up during drill. But if YOU let one hit the deck, God help you!

I hope you thanked him, as he is correct, your AR15 is a weapon, which is nothing more than a lethal tool.

Yeah, they sure can take a beating; I definately don't baby mine.

I do find it in poor taste, however, to just take something of a stranger's, regardless of what abuse it can take, and just abuse it for shits and grins.  I think if someone took a weapon of mine and beat it up, simply saying "it's just cosmetic", I'd probably shoot a hole or two in non-critical areas of his vehicle and tell him "it's just cosmetic."

I'm sure I'm going to catch all kinds of shit like "that DI has forgotten more about killing, D&C, blah blah blah, than you will ever know" and "you must be a safe queen faggot", but I don't care, that's how I feel on the issue.

I don't abuse my weapons intentionally. It's always nice to have them looking good, but if one falls off the shooting bench..oops..still goes bang. It takes a lot of the fun out of having them if you have to fuss and worry over every little scrath, mark, or divot.

I'm glad to see this post. Some folks here call these things a " precision mechanism ". While it may be just that, it is no way a fragile / delicate instrument.

Some implements are weapons and some are art.  Some may even be both.

My carry gun takes a beating.  It looks like it.

I've got others that I think are beautiful.  I've got some hunting guns that I hate to ding up.

If it's not wood and steel, though, it's simply a tool.  Only my opinion.

Yeh, I think I'll go run my SOG down the side of my truck, shave my wife's head, and paint my house with some leftover road stripping paint. It's only cosmetic.have
I've got $2200 into my AR, and $27 into an entrenching tool, guess which I'll dig with?

People that go out of their way to feel more like a man crack me up.

I've shot from every position I've stumbled across, practice transitions to my sidearm, shoot around barriers etc. My gun looks fine.

What's next, you gonna use a belt sander to make it seem like you could actually drag parts thru a corner on your motorcycle?

PS None of this is aimed at the original poster, just pre- venting for the usual "it's a tool" responses.

My uncle was a DI in the Marine corps back in the early 60's, that didn't make him any smarter. He was just in charge, and to abuse your equipment no matter what it is, is stupid. You pay good hard earned money for stuff you don't fuck it up because its just a tool. You take care of your tools they take care of you. My Dad would have kicked my ass if he saw me  fuck up his tools.

No one's telling you how to use your stuff.

Are you saying unless I'm a door kicker, I can't bang my rifle around?

And people abusing the barrels on M16A1's is why troopies now have to carry around extra dead weight on the end of their M16A2's.

A prybar is a prybar and a rifle is a rifle.  They work well in their intended function and poorly when used as the other.

They are tools, but they are very expensive tools, so they should be taken care of when the chance presents itself.  We wash and wax our construction equipment every winter before we put them away, why? Because it shows a sense of pride of ownership. Sure they get scratched and banged up, but we repaint and polish them up when they need it. Making a tool look its best is not wrong.

This is very true, and if he didn't want his AR beat up, he should have said something.

a point or something, playtime is over.

I was always taught to care for your equipment first, then yourself.  In addition, I personally believe that the contition of a firearm directly reflects on it's owner.

When you abuse a piece of equipment needlessly just to make a point, it's stupid.  I don't care if you are freaking Rambo, it's stupid.

That DI may know a lot, but if he doesn't know enough to care for his (your) equipment, I'd look for a different teacher.

Just my thoughts...

Thats assuming the Marine actually did something to cause wear or damage.... This thread has turned into people damning this Marine without having any clue as to what actually happened.

Unless the original poster decides to give us the damage or wear that was caused to his AR15, this is pointless guessing.

One day of "use" by a 0311 or 11B would probably be the same a years of "abuse" by the average civie shooter.

They get knocked around alot.  Not just for the sake of doing it though.
They get banged on against the hmmwv
Knocked around while mounting and dismounting the cattle cars
Dragged through the mud and rocks during a low crawl
Banged and scratched up - in and out of rifle racks
When you jump out of the plain - it jumps with you
I don't think I ever saw one that did not hit the deck once in a while

Grunts don't go out of their way to put it through their paces, but they don't treasure it like jewlrey.  I guess it is just a biproduct of having to carry it around 24 hours a day, all day, every day.  If it is built right, it can take it.

I don't disagree that it is a tool, but all of my tools serve me much longer and better when I take care and use them for the intended purpose with minimal abuse. hat

If it gets dinged up in the course of what you are doing, so be it. To bang it around needlessly because it'll take it is stupid. Sure it might, but if it now shoots 1 foot to the left at 100 yards because it was tossed around and the sights got banged up, well thats not all that smart.

+1,000

Reminds me of that thread a few days ago about the FFL bashing young troops because they didn’t know who manufactured their M16’s! When I was in we were happy when you DIDN’T have to go to the Arms Room to draw out your weapon! Drawing out your weapon meant carrying around a full auto billy club and even though you didn’t shoot it you still had to clean it! That was 20+ years ago. At the time I too could have cared less who made my weapon!

But back to the topic, I don’t baby my AR’s, but I do take care of my equipment. If I take care of it, it will take care of me. Just because a weapon can take a certain amount of abuse doesn’t mean I have to subject it to that level of abuse on purpose!  But if you use your weapon then scratches and wear will begin to appear, it happens and I don’t go out of my way to prevent it.

This is how I was trained to play with my rifles.
When I was done playing she would be cleaned until every patch and Q-tip came back pure white, and she was spotless and well lubed before being turned in. I maintain the same philosophy today.

I won't bang them up for the hell of it, but it happens, it's completely irrelevant unless it affects function.

O.K.
first he showed me how to "bump fire" then I asked him about maintance, he asked for it, took off my 3-9, and droped it on the ground, then tried a 20 yard field goal, which failed and tryed again.  He then took a rag out of his gear bag wiped off all of the mud, pulled out the bolt carrier, wiped it down, oiled it up, put it back together and said "here, good for a 1000 rnds more."  I shot his, and he told me about how he had used it for a tire chuck, a proved his point by placeing his under the tire of his truck, and pulling it out of gear to place the wieght on the rifle.  while drinking a cup of coffe he told me how  he has seen people pond tent stakes in with thier ar's, hid them in ponds, and just kick the crap out of them. we shot some more the he told me to toss it and have no fear of hurting it, witch I did and dont.

Gross abuse, and pointless.  Are you well acquainted with this person?  How sure are you that this person was, in fact, in the Marines?  If he was, why must his ass be kissed in such a way that you let him beat on your gear?

I shot his, and he told me about how he had used it for a tire chuck, a proved his point by placeing his under the tire of his truck, and pulling it out of gear to place the wieght on the rifle.
Gross abuse and, again, pointless.  You must trust your rifle.  Should you trust a rifle abused in such a way?  That's for you to decide.

And this, my friend, can be more harmful than the abuse the rifles see in the field.  It took me years to break myself of the bad cleaning habits I learned in the Army.  My rifles are clean and serviceable, but would never pass an arms room inspection.
