I have a factory upper (regular handguards).  The barrel is 14.5" and its the regular top with iron sights.  I want to put some kind of decent handguard on there that I can mount an EO Tech sight to instead of those iron sights.  I don't want to do much other than take off the old handguards.  Is this possible?  If so what handguards are out there that do this.  If worse comes to worse, I guess I can get one of those thingys that bolt onto the carry handle or screws into the current handguard.  I was hoping there was a rail out there so I could avoid this.

Thanks in advance

check out the Yankee HIll Machine ones. They are two piece like the handguards you've got.

Would that handguard be solid enough to hold a sight that will hold zero?  My factory handguards are not tight enougth to do the job, so I fear that the YHM ones would be just as lose.  Do they mount differently?

The YHM 2 piece rail system is tight, but the Midwest Industries 2 piece rail system is really tight.  It costs about $15-20 more but would probably be better suited for an EOtech.  I like the look of the MI ones over the YHM anyway.

I'm really interested in the 2pc. free float "monolithic" MI is putting out.

Maybe that could be an option?

I wouldn't mount a sight on any NON- FreeFloated system.  I have the YHMs, yes they are tighter than the plastic ones - I still wouldn't mount optics to them.

If you want to mount an optic on the Rail, then look to one of the FF systems that only requires you to dremel off the delta ring for installation:
Troy MRF-C
Sampson MFRS-C
Midwest Industries (their free float version, not the 2 peice handguard replacement).

Check out the Surefire rails too.

Thanks for the replies.  I really didn't want to alter the upper in anyway.  I think I would be better off getting a complete new upper half.

Thanks for the advice.

+1 I ran mine like this for a while.  It puts the sight up a little to get the FS farther out of view.  Won't cowitness though.
