Yes you can, but its often cheaper to just look around and buy the flattop to begin with. |

+1 A flattop upper will run you about $100 shipped. But you now need at least $70 in tools to do the swap. An action wrench will go for about $30-$35 and an upper vice block set will also cost about $35. As long as you have a 1/16" punch and a vice, you'd be ready to swap the uppers out. As Stickman said, it'd be cheaper to buy what you want the first time. WIZZO |
I bought a $15 bbl nut wrench and thats it. I had everything else. (the snap ring pliers and a torque wrench) I just used a regular vice with a real big face that is intended for lumber. Ive assembled three and taken apart one upper and only put a little ding on the last one I built. I dont think you need all the extra tool, although it would be nice and would have prevented my one little cosmetic scratch I have gotten along fine. The flatop was the easy one to install. If you cant find a flat top you want, I say go for it. |

If you want a flat-top A3 upper, simply shop around at the local gun show and find what you like, if ya want to purchase a whole rifle all at once. You could/can buy the "lower" (which is the actual serial numbered firearm part) alone and purchase the upper of your desire from anywhere. The gun show listed above or any of the excellent dealers found under the Industry button above, this way you'll be getting what ya want. Welcome aboard , don't buy the first thing ya see, stick around, shop around, read up on the rifles themselves and decide for yourself whether you want the investment of all the building tools the guys above suggested...Mike ps - your in the correct place to learn, if that's your desire....
