Maybe one of you guys might know..

Bought a 5.4oz. mechanical buffer for my M16 from Brownells.. When I took it out of the package it moved freely. Now after a couple hundred rounds it bound up for lack of a better term.. Wont move freely anymore,.. Is this normal? Ive never used one of these style of buffers before, thought I needed it to slow it down.. Which it did do..

Should move freely but probably won't matter in a 9mm gun, in locking bolt gun it reduces the chance of bolt carrier bounce.

Why? I don't see the point of this fad that everyone thinks they need to have a 9mm SMG buffer in their 5.56.

Isn't there something better one could spend their time and money on?

Hold on.. I dont follow fads... What I do want is to not beat the shit out of a 10K+ Registered receiver.. I have heard that by running a buffer like this, it would slow the gun down.. Which it did, by a noticeable amount..It runs about 750 vs the 900 without it..

I simply need to know if the buffer needs to have free movement between the 2 parts..

I run this exact same buffer in my RR. I have several thousand rounds through mine and it still moves freely. Don't know if it will cause any damage if it doesnt, but I wouldn't risk it.

If you fire 500 rounds through it, it is going to wear the same regardless of the cyclic rate.
