| I want to see pictures of AR15's that have Aimpoints mounted on top of a carry handle. I am building a no frills AR and i want a carry handle but may mount an Aimpoint on top of it for S's and G's. thanks, Steve. |
You will have to do a low battle sight zero at 25m in order to have a good ballistic arc (ideally center mass again at 300m). If zeroed for a 300m battle sight, the point of impact will most likely be about 1.5-2 inches low at 25m. That is an estimation. |
For some reason the A1 upper with a good optic on it just has great appeal to me. |
I definitely agree with you on that one!! |
I'm not really sure what the appeal is, but I feel it as well. I know it isn't the most practical, but its a good looking weapon IMHO. I have practical weapons, but this is just plain fun. |
I do not have any pics nor an Aimpoint, but I did mount an EOTech on top of the carrying handle on my DPMS Panther Carbine using the A.R.M.S.® #51 CV A1A2 S.I.R.® System (for the A1/A2 receiver). I do prefer this position because I can utilize my iron sights via a channel below the rail system. |
Holy cow!!! That setup is so he can still see the dot in his Aimpoint when he is shooting from the hip!!! |
mmm...maybe the protec helmet isn't comfortable during aiming so he had to put the aimpoint so high.... |

The further away from the bore axis your optic is, the more problems you will have with vertical parallax and the narrower the usable range of your optic's zero. newar-guy and others can tell you how easy it is to end up shooting a window sill or doorframe when looking through a high-mounted optic, as you tend to forget that your muzzle is several inches below your sight plane. Increasing this distance amplifies these problems. IMO, the primary exception to the "mount your optic as close to the bore axis as possible" rule is if you are using a gas mask. In that case, a normal cheek weld is impossible, and you're better off moving the optic to where you can see and use it than leaving it low and obscured by the mask. And, even then, the limitations imposed by such a setup must be well-understood and compensated for in practice. -Troy |
Or how easy it is to shoot the hood of your truck! . . . . . . . And that was just with a EOTech mounted directly on a A3 upper! |
WTF over. How would one even get that zero'd?? T zone headshots would be impossible. |
Or why did he do it at all? He has an A3 and suitable mount. |
What kind of vest is that? |
I've contemplated for a while that someone should make an optic with a prism like a binocular (or SLR camera)... so that the actual sighting objective could remain reasonably close to the bore, yet allow an eyepiece a couple inches higher to allow for helmets/goggles/NBC mask/etc clearance. </shrug> |
