I've been tasked with designing an M16A2 weapons rack for a DOD proposal. Since I design pretty much specifically in Autodesk Inventor (some in Solidworks), I need to locate some AR type models.  All the models I've been able to find online so far are all polygon mesh, which will not import into Inventor.

The models MUST be B-Rep solids. I don't need overly detailed models, but I do need the outer envelope to be accurate, and I do need a complete rifle assembly (once again, no internal components, but preferrably outer components such as the receivers, barrel, stock etc. which could be assembled into an M16A2 or the AR equivalent solid model).

Files such as CNC blanks (in NURBS Iges format) would probably be ideal for what I'm doing.

I appreciate any help you could give.

Thanks in advance

Are you sure you only need M16A2?  Much of the military has started using M16A4 flattops, sometimes with a carry handle and sometimes with one of several different types of optics.  They are also using the shorter M4 carbines, again sometimes with carry handle and sometimes with optics.  Even if it is just for the A2, some people have optics mounted on top of the carry handle or mounted on a gooseneck extension that hangs out in front over the handgaurds.  If your design requires removing these optics then it will be substandard because the soldier will be forced to re-zero the weapon everytime he removes or attaches the optic.

Also note that many weapons are using some form of railed handguards, not just the plain round plastic handguards. And the weapons with rails often have a vertical grip attached.

And welcome to the boards.

I would be interested too if you found anything.  It would just be for play though.  I ran across a website a couple of days ago, I can't remember the name, but it was an on line gaming site for first person shooters for computer.  Apairently you are able to create your own guns and import them.  Some people had given suggestion and they made them for them from pictures.  I don't know how accurate they were, but they looked good.  Some one with that experience may be able to export to a format that can be of use to you.  Just a thought.

Thanks for the welcome.

The rack will be inside a shelter - and the weapons are not for typical infantry.  The rack will need to accomodate only basic rifle configurations, no 203, no added optics etc.

Since the main physical difference (for my purposes at least ) is in the weapon OAL (overall length), I intend to design the rack to fit the larger versions, hence, it will accomodate the shorter ones as well.

Most of the stuff I've found have been free downloads from places like Turbo Squid

http://www.turbosquid.com (type M16 in the search bar and it will bring up numerous
pages, both free downloads and the ones you have to pay for.)

It depends on the software you plan to view them with, but they're mostly .3DS/.MAX, .OBJ, .FBX etc formats, which are GREAT if you're doing animation & video game creation, but lousy for design purposes.

Maybe you can use these files.

You can get resin models from seattle trader at auctionarms.com

This is one of their A1 models I used for a trophy.

ASP makes the red gun and Ring's makes the blue gun, both used for training.

Here is a rack I made for a police vehicle. For optics you have to have a lot of clearance.

ETA: Here is one of their current auctions.

If you use this one make sure the buttstock is A2 length. I think this may be an A1 with A2 handguards.

Thanks for the quick responses guys.

I had already found cncgunsmithing.com, but the only thing they have is the lower receiver.
I still need a barrel, buttstock, grip, and upper receiver.

As far as the Seattle Trader models - I'm not looking for resin models, as in you-build-it,
I'm looking for Electronic Files that can be used with CAD design software.

Again, thanks much for the help.

Okay, maybe these files will work.

THESE ARE NOT MINE

They are not an AR, I am posting these in hopes someone remembers who this guy was and what forum he was on.  I am pretty sure he did an AR with CAD also.  Maybe you can find him.
