How skilled does the armorer need to be in order to place this sling mount on my M-4:

No real skill needed. Just get one of these and do it yourself.

How much of a pain is it to do?

Really quite easy,  though the wrench tends to slip off sometimes if you're not paying attention

A retarded monkey could do it.

Though I do recommend a different plate. That's gonna be a bitch for clearance drills.

Edit: Different story if your castle nut is staked to your back plate, though.

My wrench never slipped off, beware of the spring...

It's pretty easy to do, I did it on my M4gery.

Remove the buffer tube's nut with the stock wrench.

Remove the buffer tube and the plate.

Install the new plate with the loop (see DD pic).

Install the buffer tube to the receiver. (blue loctite is recommended)

Finally tighten the nut with the stock wrench.

There are other similar brands like GG&G, KAC, Tango Down etc. There are some types which are two pieces and could be installed without removing the stock.

Here's a pic of my carbine, it's the third photo of the page. The sling plate is located just behind the lower receiver on the buffer tube and in front of the stock nut.

I had too many beers before the first time I did this, and that damn spring is still somewhere on the floor in my garage.  I found that the spring in a retractible ball point pen was exactly the right size to filt under the buffer catch.  I guess it's kinda muhajadin, but it'll do until I get another couple of those springs at the gun show.
