| Does anyone have hands on time with the carry handle sold by Tapco for $50. Is it of good quality? [email protected] |
|
I bought one of the same ones from another source. I think I only paid about $36. The handle is investment cast, but looks OK and and mounts securely on the flattop. It seems to hold its zero just fine. I got it from these folks. http://www.jsesurplus.com/shoppingcart/agora.cgi?cart_id=8587485.27855*pX7Xl2&xm=on&product=AR15 The problem is with the sights. They are the weak link in this chain. ALL of the sight parts except the windage screw are some kind of metal other than steel. They are cheap cast parts and the detents on the bottom of the elevation wheel will wear out with repeated sight changes. Overall, its worth the $35 I paid for it, The sights work for plinking - but they will wear out and would not be a good choice for any serious target work. |
| Not to mention that the whole thing is extremely soft metal meaning it will crack in a tearing manner and the parts of the sight are non-standard shaped so interchanging them with quality parts later is impossible. Also the paint is so cheezy looking it is crazy. I bought one from the sportsmans guide and sent it right back. By the time you have it shipped it will cost $50 so save your self the hassle and buy one off the EE for $85 shipped and have a quality handle. |
If you want a POS, do buy the TAPCO part. If you want a detachable carry handle that's mil-spec (for reliability and robustness if nothing else), then spend the money they're worth. |
| It costs just as much to machine a carry handle as it does a lower or an upper. You have to start with a forging and spend the time or $/hr paid to an employee to operate the milling machine that is not sitting in Taiwan with a child making $0.25 an hour running it and that makes a finished USA made carry handle cost a good bit more. |
