I see this term thrown out here on this and other forums a lot, I ask what would you people consider a real SHTF scenario, Did the 911 attack fit the term, I think not, to me there would have to be a total break down in law and order and other then a attack on the US with some sort of WMD ( Then all bets are off and its every man for himself) I don't see a SHTF scenario ever comming about. Just my 02. |

Natural disasters would probably fit the bill. i.e. Huge hurricane coming through my part of the woods. It would have to be extremely bad and you probably aren't talking about SHTF for very long. The riots in LA years ago are another example. If you really want to get technically semantical (I like making up words  ), then there is a difference, IMHO between SHTF and TEOTWAWKI (did I get that right?).SHTF is more temporary IMO, whereas TEOTWAWKI is more permanent. |

To me, the shit hitting the fan doesn't have to be a complete breakdown of society. Many of us have had to deal with local SHTF scenarios like natural disasters, looting etc. A few years ago my neighborhood was without electricity and heat for over 21 days after an ice storm. To me, that was a localized SHTF scenario. As far as WMDs go, on 9/11/01 fully fueled airliners did a pretty good impersonation of a WMD, wouldn't you agree? They killed a lot more people than the anthrax letters did, yet anthrax is considered a WMD. |

If I had to define it personally: it would be any situation where I am personally OVERWHELMED and need something extra to level the playing field. Riots Natural Disasters that turn to looting etc. Hearing the bump in the night, finding the open door, and then the 3-4 BG's instead of the 1 you might always train to engage in the "what-if" scenarios Being caught in any situation that can quickly become out of control despite your best efforts and amount of prior training you posess. Think North Hollywood Shootout, that was SHTF, not outnumbered but deff. out gunned! -Chris |

I couldn't agree more But technically a topic in this particular forum has to be specific to AR-15s. Don't sweat it Barns. If it gets locked it gets locked. If it does just try again in the general forum. Personally I think this is an interesting discussion. Then again I'm not a staff person or mod here so I know a lot less about the specific rules than they do. |
| To me SHTF is when we are fighting a guerilla warfare against our own goverment or the U.N..Air strikes will be called in on yer ass,and you will be constantly on the move.You wont be able to stay in one spot for to long,you will constantly be moving or you will get killed with a air strike.This is SHTF to me,any thing else I doubt you need a SHTF rifle. |

Don't get me wrong, I love SHTF/TEOTWAWKI/zombie threads as much as the next guy. I just figured on this getting locked for not being in GD or perhaps the survival forum. SHTF means the terrorists set off a small nuke in STL, or a raging biosaftey level 4 outbreak in a big city close by. etc... I'd say if N Korea nukes S Korea and Japan, and China sends a million men into Alaska and down the coast, and Mexico starts sending suicide bombers over the river, thats TEOTWAWKI. Personally, I'd be a lot more comfortable with a isolated release of the T-virus. |

It's all in how you define SHTF and TEOTWAWKI. Waking up and finding a BG in the house I guess is a form of SHTF, but not what I think of when I see the term in these forums. In the above situation, I'm going for the pistol located within arms reach. My AR may or may not be in arms reach and may or may not take a couple of minutes to be ready to go, so to speak. Inside my house, my first response firearm is going to be a sidearm. I'll use that to get to the rifle if needed. SHTF to me is something on a little larger scale. Riots, Natural Disasters that cut you off from typical Police and other community resources. |
| OR when your goverment tries to send you to a concentration camp,that real SHTF!Though I believe before this can hapen there will be a"MR,Mrs America Turn Them ALL In"BANN On firearms.The Scary part is Feinstein is trying to get this passed.She just indrouced another AWB and is going to try to get it passed soon again. |
