Just a single ring that mounts low, directly to the flat-top or other rail. I am guessing it would be too low . . . . .

It would be too low. Get either the ARMS #22M68 (which I prefer since it can be reconfigured) or the LaRue low mount. Either will work on the RAS II hump and give you perfect alignment.
