I've dug around a bit, and I can't seem to find the definitive answer for this:

When did Colt start marking their barrels indicating chromed chamber/chrome bore?

The Maryland AR-15 Shooters Site says:

Chrome Lined Barrels & Chambers: All current manufacture 5.56 rifles have chromed chambers, only M4 & A2 barrels have chrome bores (older barrels do have both chrome lined bores & chambers)

I have a Gov't Model Rifle (ca. 1988 sn:GS000XXX), but it is not marked, and I understand it to have neither a chrome bore, or chamber.

Is this correct?

Thanks all.

Chambers were chrome back in the 1960's.  I don't know the actual date but my GUESS would be 1966-67.  (Started chromeing after the Ichord Committee Report was issued.)  You might try emailing Colt directly and get a more definitive answer.

Dave,
Definatley e-mail Colt.  What I have on the MD-AR15 site is a generalization, Colt has a funny habit of changing the rules at odd times.

FWIW it's my understanding the Colt 'Govt Model' barrels are chrome lined (bore & chamber).

That's what I had been told shortly after I bought the rifle. The barrel is marked C MP 5.56 NATO 1/7. I was reluctant to believe it was chromed, but unmarked (I didn't think there was such a thing).

I'll try Colt, unless they want to charge me for the information...

Very attractive site, by the way. It's been a big help.
