Im stupid. Is midlength just a fancy way of saying 16"? If not, please explain. Thanks for helping out an idiot.

Midlength refers to the hand guard and gas tube.  They are around 9 inches instead of a carbine length 7 inches.  Many people say they cycle more smoothly due to the longer gas tube.  In other words the gas pulse isn't as fast and violent to cycle the bolt.  Also if you have a bayonet lug with a mid length hand guard and a 16" barrel a standard bayonet will work with this setup whereas with a 16" barrel and carbine length hand guard the bayonet won't work.  So, midlength is just refering to the length of hand guard not the barrel.

The mid-length is the way to go for a 16" barrel, longer sight radius, longer gas tube, bayonet mounts the same as a 20" and more real estate on the handguards for mounting gear.
I've got a RRA chrome lined middy that is turned down to .610" under the handguards, makes for a nicely balanced piece.

Midlength refers to the handguard/gastube setup. The barrel itself is still 16". This is in contrast to the "carbine" gas system.
