| With the same ammunition, your carbine, having a shorter barrel, will operate quicker AND more abruptly. That means that the bolt carrier will go back sooner, faster, and with a higher impulse. All of that adds up to a very harsh ejection, and that means that the brass has a lot of kinetic energy when it hits the deflector, so the carbine will "bounce" the brass more energetically than a rifle will. |
Okay. So thats a normal thing. Thanks. Its been a while since I fired a rifle. I have been shooting nothing but carbines. |
All right smarty-pants....so how do you get them ejecting the brass to the same location? Add a flux-capacitor to the rifle!!! Sorry, it early in the morning here on the left coast! Really, GHPorter hit the nail on the head! Dave |
Changing it would be nice. Because either way I was pissing the guy off next to me. The rife was ejecting brass at his range bag, the carbine was throwing brass directly in front of him. This is WITH a huge plexyglass seperator. ![]() I had to adjust where I was standing so I could try and hit the seperator. Of course, he was target shooting with a 22, and I was there blasting 30 round mags. So I don't think there was anything I could have done to make him happy except leave.

EL_TIRADOR, I always like to know why things work the way they do, so I wind up explaining things the way I do. Sometimes this helps identify problems that aren't obvious. For example, brass and steel cases have a different elasticity, so they will bounce at different velocities and in different directions. High quality brass cases are springier than cheap steel cases, so GI brass will go in one direction, while Wolf cases will go in another. mjohn, a clip on brass deflector might help you in this situation. The ones that direct the brass pretty much straight down seem to work pretty well. A brass catcher would work too. Or you might try something I've seen at a few ranges-hang a tarp or mosquito net to your right. It's kind of clunky, but it will keep the guy next to you from getting whacked with your brass. |

I will have to experiment with that. I was shooting Wolf ammo. I will bring some xm193 next time to check the defection patterns. Of course the power difference of 5.56 xm193 vs Wolf 223 will be a huge factor as well. There is a divider between the lanes, but my shells were deflecting either behind it with teh rifle, or in front of it with the carbine. |
