| How far can the AR15 in .223 shoot accurately? My buddy who is 15, thinks that it can shoot accurately at 800 yards!? Thanks gents. |

I don't know too much about this sort of thing but www.ammo-oracle.com/ does. "the SS-109 bullet was proven to have better penetration of the then-current-issue steel helmet at 600m than the M80 "ball" ammo fired by the M60. The M80 ammo was not able to penetrate both sides of the helmet at that distance; the SS-109 bullet could." That sounds pretty good to me. As far as accuracy goes I can' help you there, maybe some more reading on that site. I'm sure some one here has tried their ARs out at 1000yards. |
Seeing how I am 16, I would say that I wouldn't feel comfortable taking a shot at a 8.5/11 piece of paper with my Aimpoint past 100yrds. Thats about the size of your head, and I would only take the shot if I was prone, or sitting on a bench while rested. As, to how far you can shoot the .223, the main problem is the shooter. I myself am not a very good shot, but alot of the people on these boards would be well suited to take the 800 yard shots, expecially with their extreme varmit Ar-15's. |

The Army doesn't feel the M-16 is useful against a "point target" (read: a person) past 650 meters, any distance beyond that is considered "area fire". So the real question here is, What does your buddy define as accuratly? If he means, "Hit a person 7 out of 10 times", then the Army says he's wrong. BTW, Welcome to AR-15.COM!
