Could someone tell me what's the purpose of the circular cut out area in the photo of my AR? The rifle in question is a pre-94 Colt AR15A2 Gov't. Carbine. I am not sure if my other Colts have this same cut.

It's a milspec item remnant from the select fire rifles, a clearance cut for the auto sear.

that is a auto sear clearance cut. A lot of people how have class 3 M-16 will ask you if that cut is in the upper receiver before they buy it.
