Let me fill you in a little. I have two ARs One is older - put it together back in mid 90s Newer one was put together back in March . Both are used to shoot : WOLF / American Eagle / Olympic / Remington / etc... -whatever I get at the gun shows. Cleaned them up - Good...... Before the shooting these last two days. Took them out to the ranch to do some shooting. Type of ammo was - per above - I had FMJ,Soft Point,Hollow Point , Wolf , AE , REM , etc. But -Wolf was in Mags of only Wolf and brass was with only brass. First Day- Shot close to 100 rounds throught them both. NOT A SINGLE PROBLEM..... No misfeads, No failure to eject, No stovepipes. Of course - did not clean them - hell , I have shot hundreds of rounds throught them in the MARINES over multiple days without cleaning... Second day -I was running rounds throught them and after about the second MAG through each rifle I started to notice that ----- BOTH RIFLES WOULD : fail to EJECT the SPENT ROUNDS or Stove Pipe and Jam another in after firing.. 1st senario - - - - - It looked as if the extractor was not catching onto the lip of the round after the round was fired and the brass was staying in the chamber - - - THUS - - - as the bolt tried to go forward it would feed another round into the chamber and jam into the brass that was already in there..... If I pulled the bolt carrir back and released it to catch the brass and eject it - the bolt face/extractor would not grab onto the BRASS that was in the chamber. SO----To get the brass out of the chamber --- I could bang the butt stock down it would usually fall out or if I took a single cleaning rod and dropped it down the barrel it would knock the brass loose. 2nd senario - - - - - It looked like a STOVE PIPE. As the brass was ejected out of the chamber it would then stick in the ejection port in the stove pipe position as the bolt carrier was racking a new round into the chamber. - - - THUS - - - a spent caseing and a new casing were both hitting each other.... MY THOUGHTS - - - - - - The older rifle has done this periodicly in the past and I have added one of the "D-FENDERS" on the extractor so that it would bite harder onto the brass. It worked for a while - now I am noticing this problem again. The new rifle has never had this problem before.. MY IDEA OF THE FIX - - -> Look around - find out who makes a good strong - EXTRACTOR & EXTRACTOR SPRING COMBO , Maybe add the DEFENDERS to them or the Olympic Arms Polymer Xtractor Assist thing ... I think that would fix the problem relatively cheaply since it is not too expensive either for Extractor & Spring & Defender type gizmo. ALSO - - - NEW EXTRACTOR / SPRING / D-FENDER type additives ???????? Please let me know who makes the STRONGEST --EXTRACTORS/SPRINGS/ D-FENDER type GIZMOS - - If you know.. ALL HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED..... |

I'm guessing you didn't clean or even lube after the 1st day. I had a similar incident recently with wolf. I started shooting with just a lightly lubed rifle using Wolf. I stopped for a while (let the rifle cool - it was in the mid 30s) while shooting other ARs. I went back to shooting the first rifle and found it turned into a single shot. All that burnt powder with the light lubing didn't allow the bolt carrier to travel fully to the rear (talk about drag!). After I shot in some CLP - worked the charging handle a few time - the rifle was good to go and I fired round after round with Wolf. ARs work best when wet - especially with Wolf. Yes I've done 1000+ rounds between cleanings - I've gone to 3 day shooting courses and not cleaned the rifle till I got home. But that was all using quality (Military grade) ammo. Wolf is extra dirty, if you want to shoot alot of it then keep the bolt well lubricated (as indicated in the -10). I have run 500-600 rounds of Wolf between cleanings - but I always started the day with a shot of CLP into the bolt carrier group. |

Man - I would have to say that I noticed more failures with BRASS. The bolt was wet, not too wet, but wet. But I did not wipe it down or anything - hell I only put 100 rounds through them the first day. I am wondering why it would not pull the brass from the CHAMBER and why the stovepipes.. Man I need to figure out how to fix these extraction problems. |
