a friend of mine has an fn upper with a colt barrel that I'm thinking of buying. Anyone have any opinions or experience with the fn parts?

True FN parts generally aren't available to the public.  Many vendors claim their parts are FN, when in fact they are not.  There are a few true FN parts floating around the public sector, but they are generally few and far between.  I would guess your friend has an aftermarket, milspec receiver with a Colt barrel, but I'm thinking it isn't FN.

Let the flames begin!!

Dont quote me on it or hold me to the flame but I thought all FN products civilians had were millitary rejects.

If its a nice rifle, shoots good, and is a good price go for it. But dont pay lots of extra cash for an FN upper, BM, RRA, Mega, Colt, Armalite they are all just as good.

I had also heard that they were either hard to find or not for sale. He bought it from someone he trusts and it does have the fn proof stamp on it (for what thats worth).also, a quick web search located at least one vendor selling rifles made with one

No flame intended, but that's not true.  We had an employee of FN post here that all rejects are destroyed.

In fact, one of the vendors was selling true FN barrels, properly stamped in sealed bags, which were properly labeled with military supply info.  Don't remember who it was, though.  Saw a pic of one, new in the plastic bag, with the proper military markings, though.

Having worked with the military supply system in a past life, my guess is that any true FN parts you find in the public sector are ones that "slipped through the cracks" of the bureaucratic military supply system.

From all the info I've received, the receiver pictured below is typical of how FN receivers are marked.  Note the "F" stamp, not forged, but stamped, near the rear sight.  I have no idea how A4 receivers are marked, if at all.

There ARE some FN A2 uppers, and A1 and A2 barrels out there.  As far as I can tell, they were milsurped out by Army people after the switchover to the M4. Now that the Marine Corps is also going over to the flat top upper, you may see some more A2 type uppers here and there.

Alright, either you sell me the barrel or I sell you the receiver and then we will all know that there is at least one true "FN" upper in civvy hands out there.

Supposedly I have an FN bolt carrier, but I really doubt it.

I have an FN bolt, marked "MPF".  It was like new when I got it.  I also have a bunch of "FN" extractors, which are marked with a white "N" on the spring side.  The parts are out there, it's just that "FN" can't sell directly to the public.

The military supply system has HUGE cracks in it.  Alot of stuff "slips" through these cracks on a regular basis.  If you know or used the system, you know what I mean.  We couldn't keep handtools in my division.  Where did $10,000 worth of handtools go every year????  Even at gov't prices, that's a buttload of combo wrenches, ratchets and sockets.
