These questions are for the original M16, not the XM16 or the XM16E1... I know the M16 used the detent on the front pivot but.... Did the original M16 use the slickside upper receiver that had the front pivot hole recessed to take the screw pin thing like on the XM16 (602) and the 601? What finish was spec on the M16 bolt and carrier? |
|
Yes the slick side uppers have a recess for the pin detent, All M16 uppers the AF used even after the switch to the captive type pivot pin still have the recessed counterbore to be compatible/interchangable with mod 01/02 lowers. Even the AF A2 conversions are so counterbored . The early M16 carriers and bolts are chromed, Early type " Fat Body " firing pins were used along with a solid chromed firing pin retainer. Gas key screws usually have one stake ea. The cam pin was also chromed too I think but it's been awhile since I have seen one.. |
You mean for the screw pivot piece, right?
That is what I thought. I have the solid firing pin retainer pin and I need to find the old style firing pin. |
Roger on the single stake, Nossir, on the chrome cam. The cam and gas key screws were always blue. Believe Bigger Hammer has a pic on that site, which matches the pieces on the smoothside AF surp unit at my house exactly. |
| The 1964 Sp1 I have has a slick sided bolt carrier and a non chromed bolt marked MP both have a grey/green parkerized finish. Some of the pre 1966 SP1/M16 and XM16E1's I've handled over the years have had chrome plated BC's and Bolts or just chromed Bolts with parkerized carriers........with Colt it was/is pretty much use up what they had unless the order specified particular part. |
