I have read that colt MP tests every rifle, but can't figure out what this means.

M, magnetic particle tested. They scatter iron filings on it and put a big magnet on it and the filings stand on end to follow the flow of the magnetic field. If there's a crack in the steel, even an invisible one, the filings are disturbed and make the crack visible.

P, proof tested. They fire the M197 nickel plated proof load, approaching or exceeding 70,000 PSI. If there are any hidden flaws in the metallurgy, they will show up at this time.

Where I work at we use MPI on several products we make (forgings)
Basically we magnitize the part, while distributing a liquid bath mixture of mag particles over it.
If there is a crack / lamination in the metal, the particles will be drawn to the crack.
It is viewed under a black light.
These indications, cracks, laminations,,, whatever you want to call them stand out like a sore thumb under a black light.
I am only familiar with the "wet method" however there are other methods of  "non destructive testing" available, including MPI. Eddy Current, ultra sonic, X-ray, and Im sure there are others.
I am currently a MPI level 1 and 2 inspector where I work at and am considering obtaining my level 3
At any rate, hope I answered your question.
