Hey everybody,  relatively new to the forum and to ar's for that matter.  I recently received my first ar it is a preban colt sporter with telestock and and adco arms upper.  It is an m-4 configuration my dilemma is this  I am going to replace the normal carbine hanguard with a rail type handguard and i was just wanting to get some opinions from some more experienced individuals.  Im obviously looking for the most cost effective solution but i dont want to sacrifice quality either,  Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. My Budget is about 225.00

Thanks

What are you going to put on the rails?  If it is for sights thats one thing, for pistol grip and flashlight, you can get by with cheaper models.

im looking to put on some type of light.  Im also looking to put a red dot sight on but i was going to put that on another post .  Im also going to put a vertical grip.  As far as sights go im not really sure what to put on.  Im going for more of a tactical entry type of ar so im assuming a red dot sight would be more suitable for that type of firearm but any opinions or product references would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the site.

Please keep in mind, I am TRYING to stay within your budget.  I would like to show you the choices you have, and then allow YOU to make the money decision, rather than to say, "You should get this no matter what it costs."  I would hate to see you buy something, and then hate it and buy something else, and have spent more money than if you bought the one you wanted from the beginning.  (if that makes any sense... it is kinda late right now.)

First you need to decide if you would like to Free float the barrel or not.

Then You need to decide if you would like to disassemble the weapon (remove the barrel)  in order to attach your ras.

If you don't want to free float, look into a Knight's Armament ras, or a surefire mentioned above, or a YHM.

If you want to free float, but don't want to disassemble... look into an ARMS SIR, or a Troy Industries MRF.

If you want to free float, and don't mind taking off the barrel... look into a KAC FF ras, A LaRue Tactical ras, or a Daniel Defense ras.

Also, when you decide to get your red dot, LaRue tactical makes EXCELLENT mounts for BOTH the Aimpoint and the Eotech.  These mounts attach to the flat top of the UPPER RECEIVER (which imho, is a better place to put optics.)

I would try a search on the above to see pics and check features, and then check the EE for GREAT prices from arfcom dealers, like ADCO, G&R Tactical, MSTN, etc etc (placed in alphabetical order so as not to play fav's.... they are all good companies.)

Have a good one.

For the best cost and tight fit with exellent machining I recommend  the Yankee Hill machine 2 pc. handguards. The fit tight and seem as well built as the Knights arm. rails IMHO. You can pike up  em from 1 of the dealers on this site.  I got a set thru Bravo Co.

+1 on the Yankee Hill Machine 2 piece.  Just got a set for my wife's M4.  Very robust, well made and fit tight.  She's only had it for about 24 hrs, and don't know if it'll stay put for optics mount (I doubt it...it ain't free floated) but it's rock solid with the light and vert grip

+2 on the YHM 2-piece handguards.  They are very well made and  very solid with a tight fit.  I got mine from "Brightflashlights"  He is listed in the Industry section.

The Equipment Exchange here on arfcom can be a great asset in reducing costs.

Other than what Stainless listed, I would look at the Knight's RAS II - no disasembly of the upper, free floats, and works very well with an Aimpoint.

Here's my YHM 2 piece handguards...  I use two different rail covers because its the only way it will fit in its weapon lock.

You guys have been great , very helpful now as far as handguards go the yhm seems like the one to go with.  Now i have never replaced a handguard before so im not real sure what it intails the two piece handguard seems easy enough to install but how hard is it to remove the m-4 handguard I have now.

Thanks alot

Its easy I can push the delta ring down far enough to make it a 1 person job.If the spring in the delta ring is real tight have some one help while you pull down or get a handguard removal tool,Bushy sells them.YHM 2 piece is what Im getting,I already have the RAS pannels and tango down grip wich altogether cot a little over $200 so I saved at least $120 by not going RAS.The 2 piece guards do fit tight and I went that route because I wanted a fore grip and wanted to mount my aimpoint between my A2 rear and front site.If I had a flat top I probably would have just gotten a single rail for my bottom guard and used the flat top for the sight.I like the stregnth of the fixed handle so I went the handguard/rail way.

I have use the handle of a channel lock or wire crimper with sucess pushing down the Delta ring. Just flip the tool around and use the rubber cover handle and place it over the D-Ring and push it down.
