I am the proud owner of a Colt Pre-Ban AR-15 A2 Gov't Model R6550 (20" 1:7). Now that the ban has expired, I am wondering about the value of pre-ban weapons. I would think that they would naturally drop due to the fact that you can now get all the previously banned features on a new rifle, but I have heard of some states keeping in place pre-ban laws. Also I have heard that Colt will not be going to pre-ban configurations for civilians etc.. If anyone can shed some light on what my weapons value will be going forward, I would really appreciate it.

First thing, what state are you in ? Second there are plenty of Colts around. Third I would say $750.

Its worth what someone wants to pay for it. Im a shooter not a collector. I suggest you not worry so much about how much its worth and concentrate on your shooting skills WITH that rifle.

I hear what you are saying. I don't plan on selling, just curious. Funny you mention the shooting skills. Just recently I said it was time to go to the range again. I will be there next Wednesday. Going to try some IMI ammo out.

You might want to look under your handguards again.

I have a Colt R6550K AR-15 Gov't model , and the barrel is light under the handguards, not heavy.

Kinda curious now, hope you check it for me.

Yeah, the 6550 was only made for a short time (1988-1990; should have govt profile barrel) and is therefore one of the "rarer" AR15s in the pre-ban era.  Should also have a bayo lug.  Some guys are asking (although I doubt they're getting) big bucks ($1900) for those, on, for example, gunsamerica.com

Live and learn. I thought the HBAR was the portion beyond the handguards. The barrel is light under the handguards. Oddly enough, there is no bayonet lug and yet the Colt configuration tables say it should have one. Anyway, I appreciate the feedback.

Then outside of the rollmarkings, what you have is the same as the 6551 Sporter Target. Exactly like a 6550 Governemt Target, except for markings and bayonet lug.

Colt had a nasty habit of mixing parts around during transition periods. Sounds like they ran out of bayonet lugged barrels, before they ran out of Government Target marked lowers.

In any event, one of the more desireable configurations, with or without a bayonet lug and markings. Full length rifle with Government profile 1/7 twist barrel.

Got one in my safe. (6551 Sporter Target.) Mine came drilled for the push type pivot pin, and weep hole, even though it had the screw type pivot. Promptly changed.
