On just the receiver forging, the A-3 is cheaper than the A-2 IIRC.

My last RRA flat-top was like $90 and the last A-2 RRA I got was like $138.

I'm hung on the looks of the A-1 and A-2 myself.

If I have a reason to go A2, I have a reason to go A1. More rugged, and lots cheaper.

But about your logic..

Being a poor college kid, I thought starting off with an A2 would be good, because it'd save $70 on the carry handle. Very poor planning. Wait a little longer to save the cash for the rifle you want; it took me another year to get the tools and know-how to finally swap my upper for an A3, which I could have gotten in an additional month if I'd saved.

I bought an A4 upper from RRA. You can get just the flattop for cheaper but by the time you buy a scope mount or a BUIS you have more in them than the A2. I am going to build an A2 next. I may build a flattop with 18'' SS barrel for hunting. And put my 16'' CAR stuff onto a A2. The A2's look cool tho.

I have to side with Not A LLama - you can't beat the versatility of an A3 upper.  I use mine to mount either an ACOG TA31 attached to the carry handle or go SPR with a Leupold VariX-III in an Armalite 1-piece mount.  Now that's fun with yer gun!
