I bought a used Colt AR 9mm, and the stock on it was a cheap aftermarket retractable, so I ordered a genuine Colt stock from SAW. While I was placing the order, I also ordered a 9mm 'B' style buffer and spring for the gun, as the buffer that was with the gun looked like a cheap run of the mill buffer, although it worked. My question, is, did I need this 9mm buffer and spring that I spent $89 dollars on? Since the cheap one seemed to work OK, should I have just left well enough alone? |

Was the "cheap" buffer made of steel? How many ounces did it weigh? If you don't have a scale, you can take it to the post office and use their scale. Regular 9mm buffers (Colt, RRA) weigh 5.5oz. The A, B, and X Colt 9mm buffers all weigh more than that. They go from lightest to heaviest in that order. If its a steel 2 piece 9mm buffer, it was probably OK. if it was just a normal carbine 223 buffer then you should be glad you changed it as it will ruin the rifle in short order. |
I bought this gun used-how would the normal buffer ruin the rifle? It looks like a run-of-the-mill buffer to me, but I can't be sure 'cause all my guns are Colts with either the H buffer or that big plastic buffer Colt supplys with their guns ETA-OK, the buffer in the gun does look like a normal carbine buffer, I have no idea how many rounds were fired with this buffer, how do I know if the gun was damaged?????? |
OK none of that seems to have happened, so do you think the guns OK/ Is the B buffer too heavy??? |
| I'm sure the gun is fine, and if it runs with your chosen plinking ammo just call it good and move on. Keep a couple of extra trigger/hammer pins around though, because if it was shot a lot with the carbine buffer the hammer pin that's in there probably took a beating. |
Ok cool-so the worst thing to have happened would have been extra wear on the hammer pins??? So the gun itself probably has no perm damage??? This is the down side of buying used. I appreciate your correspondence |
| The only thing that could have happened is the blown case head, and you'd see marks if that had happened...so maybe he never put any +P or +P+ through it with that buffer in it. I suppose the pin hole could get 'wallered out' as they say down South..but not likely. Just replace the pin and then don't worry about it! |
Would a blown case head trash the whole gun? I dont see any evidence of it....but I may not know what I'm looking at. |
