I got my first AR yesterday and got it to the range today. It is a DPMS Carbine with the 11.5" bbl with 5.5" FH. The first 2 shots were fine then it failed to pick up a round from the mag every time after that, I tried 6 different mags same problem with all, it happens from the first to last shot in the mag(30 rounders). I fired it by pulling the charging handle back for every shot(my fringers are killing me). I then loaded one round into a mag and fired it and the bolt did not lock back. This is short stroking right? What can I do? What do I need to look at and check? I waited 6 weeks for the rifle and I would hate to send it back. I'm not an idiot, I can handle working on it, I'm just not familiar with everything that can cause this. Thank you. BTW-I'm shooting Winchester CPX1 55gr SP, theis superX line. |
| Forgot, the rifles fit and finish is awsome, no flaws at all, and it is very accurate. At 50yds, 3 clicks up and 2 clicks left it was dead center of a 2" bulleye, 3/4" group (open sights), It's a great rifle so far, it would be alot better if it wasn't a single shot though. |

First - Did you clean and inspect the rifle before Firing? If not - do it Now. ar15.com/content/guides/maintenance/ If there are no broken / worn looking parts , then it is probably a function issue related to manufacture. (we will assume the ammo and mags are ok ) Short barrel AR's are notorious for gas related problems. It may need the gas port cleaned or enlarged - or a new (pigtail) gas tube installed. |
Yes, I cleaned everything except the bbl(its chrome lined) last night. The rifle is brand new from DPMS, this is the first it was fired except at the factory. |

I did clean it right after I got it home friday evening, everything looked ok. The carrier key is tight, I also cecked that and it is staked. I did try something else since my last post, I picked up 3 boxes of Federals American Eagle yesterday and tried it because I read on Maryland AR15 that slower burning powder can cause more pessure and cause short stroking by tring to unlock the bolt to early and slowing down the bolt. The first 15 shots of the Americn Eagle were perfect then the rest were exactly the same as the Winchester ammo, FTF on every shot, BTW extraction is perfect, I have a wonderful self extrating single shot, HA HA! To sum it up, I tried two different types of ammo, 6 different mags, the carrier key is tight, the rifle is clean, there is no metal shavings or unusal rub marks any where, there is no deep extrater marks on the caseings either, and I cleaned it yesterday after all of this shooting(120 rounds) and everything still looked good and the carrier key was still tight. I'm at a loss, I was so happy to finaly get it and now I'm just pissed. I'm thinking out of spec gas port, what are your thoughts? BTW I also manuly pressed the bolt catch in on the last shot 5 times and the bolt only locked back 1 time and that was 2 different mags. Thanks for the thoughts. |
