I have just purchased a Colt and want to adjust the front sight. Is there a common or readily available tool to turn the post? How do people do it without a tool? Pliers??? Thanks... Geoff |

Thanks for the reply. I'm new to the AR so please excuse the dumb questions. I figured using a round or small screwdriver to push down the "locking post" but how do you grasp the sight itself to turn it? I am just being overly carefull not to mess things up. Thanjs... Geoff |
Good choice in rifles Brownells sells a variety of sight adjusting tools. Otherwise, the tip of a 5.56 round works fine - press down the detent and turn. |

It's hard to explain in words...you have to push down the detent pin with the bullet tip, and then turn the sight with that same bullet tip while keeping the detent pushed down. Once you turn the sight a little bit, it will cover the detent and keep it held down. You should be able to move the sight about half way using the detent position it was in before, then use the one you want to move it to to turn the sight the rest of the way. As long as you're careful you won't scratch anything. If you're using a copper-jacketed bullet, you don't have anything to worry about at all, it might leave what look like scratches but they are just copper from the jacket and will go away when you clean it. Hope this helps. |

I have qualified on a dozen or so different army ranges, have never once seen a front sight tool. We always used a Military Ball cartridge (FMJ), just use the tip to push down the detente, then tilt it to move the sight post the desired direction. once the detente is under the flanged part of the sight post, and not exposed in a notch, it is easy the turn with the cartridge until the detente pops up in the next notch. Once you get the hang of it, I believe it is easier with a cartridge than with that sight tool. |
Not quite as easy, since the sight tool fits in the notches in the sight post and allow you to turn it as much as you need to while not worrying about the detent. Of course, you can use the $5 you didn't spend on the sight tool for ammo |
