| Forgive my ignorance. I am familiar with the M16, M16A1, M16A2, M4, M4A1, etc. But I have heard quite a bit of chatter regarding the SPR. I think that is what it is called. Is it Special Purpose Rifle or what? I have seen some pics of some that people have built and called SPRs. Is this an actual arm in military use? If so, are there rigid specification set in stone regarding how it is set up, accurized, and acccessorized? You know like barrel contour/length, stock, optics, mounts, bipod, flash suppressor, etc? What is its intended mission/purpose that is not already covered by some other rifle? Any factual information regarding the SPR would be appreciated. (Like for example, is it really called an SPR?) Thanks! |

flat top, pri forend, gas buster, arms rail on top, arms 22 rings, loopy scope, douglas barrel, 18 inches, a special brake made by ops inc is on the barrel as well as a collar, this means a can screws on the end easily, match trigger do a search, kind of like a sniper rifle set up for intermediate ranges, 700 yards or so adco firearms in the industry forums has specs, pricing, pics, and build services, so does mtsn i beleive |

Thanks... I have been searching since I posted this and have found some, but not all answers. What is the purpose of this rifle? Wouldn't you be a whole lot better off with a .30 cal if your intent was long range sniping? I mean I love the M16/AR15, and I kinda like the 5.56/.223 round as well. But I think they have a certain niche that they fill, and 700 yard sniping seems to be exceeding that niche...or am I off base here. |

www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=2&f=134&t=141410 more info above As to the exact use... it is not really meant to be a true 'long' range sniper platform. It is used for rapid followup precision shots that are longer range than what the M4 or even M16a2 are capable of. I would guess purpose to be 600-800 meter range. In terms of .308, that could be used, however, the options are either the M24 or the M14. The M24 is not semi auto, so not as rapid in follow-up. The M14 is semi auto, but is not capable of precision shots like the SPR without some accurizing work. The .50 caliber sniper platform might be a possibility, but I think I would prefer a lighter weapon. At least that is the way I interpret the information that I have seen. |

The Navy Mk 12 Mod 0 is the "SPR", an 18" 5.56x45 rifle system with a bunch of overpriced accessories. The Navy Mk 11 Mod 0 is based on the KAC SR-25 (knights armament corporation), which uses 7.61x51 NATO ammo. Again, it is extremely overpriced. Neither are "true" sniper rifles, but rather serve well as designated marksman rifles or if you need to reach out and touch an enemy at longer ranges while maintaining decent operability in CQB. I.e. using a M82A1M Barrett or M-24 in CQB isn't exactly a good idea. |
