LOL, hello

I picked up my first stripped lower today.  What I really wanted were the ones with the .223/5.56 markings, but this was all they had left.  And i didnt feel like waiting 2 more months for the next show, I decided to buy it with the BM kit.

Anyways, I just tackled it in the dinner room tonight.  Everything went pretty smooth, considering, all I used was a hammer, my allen wrench set, needle nose pliers and an old pen that doesnt work anymore .  So, no extra parts lying around, except for what i need for the stock.

But the problem is, I installed the trigger guard the wrong direction.  So that means, I punched in the detent on the wrong side.  It's about 3/4 of the way in.  I've tried to remove it with my pliers, but it wont budge.

You think a gun smith and remove it, or should i try something else?

If I understand this you installed it going in the right direction but upside down if thats the case you should be able to pull it out as the front left side has no hole for the dtent to spring in to.If its the oposite side then just put a punch through the roll pin hole to dpress the detent unless you drove in the roll pin and jammed it in if thats the case try a smaller punch that will fit through from the other side to push it all back out, other than that dont force it and consult a smith if it does not budge.

Grab the roll pin with vise grips and twist it out.   You'll kill the pin but any decent gunshop should have a roll pin that will work.

That sounds confusing as hell .

It's not in the right direction.  The front has to be at the back, and the back has to be in the front.

In this pic, you can see the spring loaded pin

Here is the pin i punched in.  Looks like about 20% sticking out

Ah now I see,if you cant grab it with a vise grip try the punch from the other side, other wise I dont know if you could cut it in any way to remove it piece by piece. Its in a tricky spot.

Does the other end of the trigger guard go up and work? If so, just file the roll pin excess off and call it done. No biggie.

I would like to have a 458 marked lower, you got this at a funshow?

If you can't somehow get the roll pin out and if your trigger guard is plastic, you might just take some snips and start chipping away at the trigger guard (it'd probably work with an aluminum one, but might take longer). Once you've got enough of the trigger guard cut away, you can probably push the roll pin out using a pair of needlenose pliers. A new trigger guard and roll pin should run you around $5.00-6.00.

...or that would work too.

I'll agree, it is a nice looking lower.  This batch of Mega lowers is fantastic compared to all my Colt, Bushie, Oly....

Well, I guess I'll take it to a gunsmith to take care of it.  I hope it's not more than $30 to pull that out in liek 30 secs.
I cant punch it through the other side, since there's only 1 hole on the end of the trigger guard.  I dont want to cut off the end, for whenever I decide to change something with it in the future.
And yes, I did get it at a funshow.

Now lets talk about the quality of the Mega lower.
I will say, its as good as my BM lower.  At the show, all the Mega's are oiled, but the BM and other brands are dry as bones.  So if you're just looking at the table, the Megas look 10X better.  But if they are equally oiled, they will all look great.

Also, the magazine well walls are thinner on the Mega than my BM.  Granted, I think it's thick enough to be strong, but it is thinner.

I do love the logo print though.  Very nice, clean, and deep prints.  Unlike some of the BM they had at the table.

So for about $60 less than the other brands, i would pick another Mega over them.

The Mega lowers are not "oiled", I'm not sure where you heard that from.  They run through a different anodizing, but the sheen is part of that.  It isn't oil.

I also can't believe you are going to take your problem to a smith.  Fix it yourself!!  You are the one building it, and this is simply part of the process, but don't run to someone else to do it for you.  This is well within your ability to fix.

Even if it takes you a couple hours of work, and soaking it in lube overnight, don't take the easy way out.

Find someone with a dremmel and a cut off wheel, carefuly cut through the triggerguard and rollpin without touching the ear.Remove the triggerguard and throw it away. Now take a punch and push whats left of the rollpin out from the back or drive it the rest of the way through from the front.Sounds like a good excuse to go buy a dremmel.

Or maybe a small E-Z out to get it moving and you might pull it right out.

We have fixed problems like this before.  Your problem is that the roll pin is driven into a blind hole.

Get a good quality vice grip and clamp it onto the roll pin.  Put the lower into a padded vice, be careful here, and tighten it enough to hold the lower securely but not mar or god forbid, crush it.

Take a large punch and use it to drive on the front of the vice grips, driving the roll pin out.  A wife, GF or buddy to support the vice grips is a big plus.

The entire operation should take about 5 minutes.

Replace that pos plastic trigger guard with an aluminum one.  If ya can't find one anywhere else I have them for builds.

+1 for the E-Z Out.

This would be the simple, no chance of damage approach. Insert screw extractor, twist T-handle and pull, out comes the roll pin!

Drill a small hole on the other side and punch it out.

By the way I'v done the same thing

I shaved it off and left it it.

I'm thinking of cutting the guard in two and starting over , just because.

Woo hoo, I got it off myself!

I went the dremel route.  Overall, I think I did a decent job.  When the dremel went through the trigger guard, it kinda jumped and knicked the base of trigger area.  I think a black marker will hide it pretty well.

I had to go through 2 dremel cutting wheels though.  The 1st one cracked in half when i was halfway through.

Woo hoo
