I am building a new AR and was wanting some info on barrels. Which barrel is more accurate? And which barrel will lasts longer? A stainless steel or a chrome moly barrel? Thank you, Phessor

I ask Bushmaster the very same question and they thought the chromemoly in the varminter shot a little better than the stainless varminter special. I was suprised but that is a direct quote from the Bushmaster tech.

it is a little on the surprising side

My old varmint rifle had a 24" S/S bull barrel that shot 3/8" groups all day.  My next build is just a plinking & coyote gun.

I've always heard that the S.S. barrels were slightly more accurate than Chromoly barrels but that the chromoly barrels will last a little longer.  You lose a little accuracy with a chrome lined barrel but it will last the longest out of any of the other two.

That is what I've been told also.

What type of AR are you looking to build?  It seems that we are assuming you are going with a Target/Varmit style but you never said.  What barrel lenght were you thinking about and what would you be using it for?

One of the things that I have noticed, about any steel barrel, is that on a hot summer day, the steel will hold the heat longer, heat causes expansion; witch in turns opens up tolerances,   So... I personnal have more then one  barrle, are upper.

Chrome lined for reliability and long barrel life. Think in the realm of 20,000+ rounds.

Stainless Steel for accuracy and precision, with a shorter barrel life.

Chrome moly for the ones that stay in a glass case on your wall .

This is actually no longer true. Modern metalurgy and machining processes have made chrome-lined barrels as accurate as the CM or SS barrels. Other factors are involved as well, such as weights, and heat disapation.
What ever type of barrel is used, its going to be more accurate than most shooters.

I am not a metalugis so someone feel free to correct me.  Chrome moly should last longer than stainless because of the metals natural lubricating qualities.  Stainless does not have this quality.  Which usually make the barrels more expensive cause of the different tooling required to shape it. Although stainless would be more accurate because it tolerates heat differently.  Meaning It can take higher temperatures before it starts doing silly things like expand.  The other benefit to stainless is its corrosion resistance.   A chrome lined bore is going to give better corrosion resistance that chrome moly will and is more resistant to wear.   A chrome lined barrel also has better lubricity which will make it easier to clean.  Thpough I have not tested this but theoretically a chrome lined barrel should provide slightly faster velocities than the moly barrel.

I'll shut up now

20", A2 profile. chrome lined bore and chamber, 1/7. That's what I like. shoot 62gr M855 all day long.
Stainless is nice but heavy. Chrome moly will rust/pit. HBAR WAY too heavy. Go with milspec, can't lose.
