I've been authorized to buy ONE gun by the old lady.  In making my decision I decided since I can only have one I should get something I can change around with lots of fun accessories!  I ended up here in my search.  Now I spent 3 years as an armorer in the Army working with this type of rifle... but I did it with no extra training (we were woefully understaffed) So I'm no super expert, if anything besides something simple was wrong I just sent it off for repair.

I have some questions...

1)  The price ranges for these rifles seem to vary wildly... they all work off basically the same parts I saw in the army with the exclusion of the 3 round burst setup right?

2)  Right now I have a 800 dollar budget, I want to get something I can be shooting right away but accessorize later... I read many threads about building them yourself but I have to tell you I was quite intimidated by all the terminology and choices.  So, what should I get?

I will be shooting mostly 100 yards or less and would also like it to be practical in a home defense situation to back up my Ruger.  Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated thanks... and thanks for the interesting reading, I spent days reading and then signed up!

I would say to definitely go with an A3 model with detachable carry handle. That way you can use the iron sights until you upgrade to optics (and you will. ) Yes, the parts are basically the same as those found in the M16, with slight changes. M16/AR-15 firecontrol parts will physically interchange, though not legally.
