For general carry, get a soft case.  Preferably the Eagle or Tactical Tailor.  They're the best, IMO.

Only thing you really need a hard case for is airplanes.

Going to have to disagree...

My starlight double rifle cases with wheels that I got at Sam's for $68 are tough.  I've got the foam cut so that I can fit four long arms in a case at the same time.  After I took the wheels off a case (they are attached with bolts and are easy to remove)  it will now fit behind the seat of my pickup or in the trunk of my wifes car.  I have to PCS every now and again and it comes in very handy for this, vactations, or toting several longarms to the range...

You can cut the foam anyway you want or have different sets of foam.  You can always get single rifle cases as well if you don't want to lug the huge double rifle cases around.

If you can find a cheap one at Sam's, then go for it.  If not, then they may be out of your price range.

I've got a Galati soft case that I usually carry to the range.  It is a nice case and my only complaints are that the zipper is on the bottom and that the thing is made in China...

Those Starlight cases are truly the deal of the century. It should be noted to Five-five-six that the case Nate1 is referring to would probably cost you well over $200 anywhere else-Sam's is blowing them out well below dealer cost.

I have a few of the hard Starlight cases and a couple of soft Galati cases. If my rifles are going to spend a lot of time in the car or bounced around in the back of a cruiser when loaned out I tend to use a hard case. If it's just a quick trip to the range I use a soft case for ease of transport.

If you can get your hands on a Sam's Starlight cases it will last you a lifetime. If you want to check availability in your area ask for SKU# 212836.

Here is an old pic of one of mine:

Edited to add: Here is some torture testing info betwen Starlight and another popular brand

I'd tend to agree having a choice and $$$$$$$ not being an issue, I'd go Peli.  But for the $$$ Starlight Surpasses Peli.  Peli's my favorite, but considering the Starlights can be had for half their price?  Peli's NOT 2xs the case.

That is truly the best "urban camouflage" I have ever seen

<sideways glances making sure wife isn't looking>

Not only that, if you toted one of those guitar cases through Harvard Square in Boston you could probably get laid too

I have a few guitar cases... maybe I could get some foam and make my own hard case. I may have to seperate the upper and lower though...

If you do transport your weapons on a commercial flight, get a QUALITY hard case (Peli or Starlight). Bad things happen to your luggage; buy peace of mind.........
