How many of you out there own a bayonet for your ARs? What bayo is considered the best of the bunch? regards |
|
I have one. It's not a requirement, per se, but I think you should have one if you own a pre-ban that can actually wear a bayonet. Stick with an M7 or M9. There are some cheap aftermarket jobs out there that are best avoided. Of the M7s, a good surplus bayonet will serve you well. A step up would be the Colt-marked, Solingen-made M7. You can usually snag one for ~$50 and they're pretty nice. My favorite M7 (and I'm biased, of course) is the Carl Eickhorn M7 with wire-cutter. The M9s are pretty pricey compared to the M7, but make a decent field knife as well. The early Buck's are somewhat collectible and generally command a high price. Any current-manufacture M9 is serviceable, but beware the aftermarket crap. Lancay and Phrobis (spelling?) should be OK. |

When I finally get my first AR built it will have a bayonet (Mid-length barrels rock!). It's mostly for the cool factor...unless you are one of those guys who would run around in his underwear screaming and spearing random household objects. Besides, it makes it a lot harder for zombies to run and tackle you when you have a knife on your gun Seriously though, for survival a knife is a nice thing to have. I know you survival types probably have more than 1 knife on you already (nerds!) but its a nice thing to have. Sure, it doesn't serve any real purpose for a civilian, but its cool anyway. Kind of like the Accuwedge |
![]() I spent WAY too much time trying to figure out the M9 history and frankly I know that there is much more that could be captured but it is a pretty good overview and I had the help of quite a few people to get the description this far... quarterbore.com/knives/m9bayonet.html The Phrobis Bayonet is one of the very best M9 Bayonets out there along with the Buck models! The Buck Marked bayonets are civilian models (for the most part) while the Phrobis M9s are USGI. These bayonets have much better steel and a much better grind and finish then later models. The LanCay M9 bayonet has been made in so many variations that I am frustrated trying to understand them all. There are some that are as good and look like the original Buck and Phrobis M9s to later models that are rather crude in comparison but they are also much cheaper to make which is what Uncle Sam cared about. The current USGI M9 is made by LanCay and Ontario and while these are rugged knives they sure are not the same as the originals. Hope this helps and if anybody can add to my page above, PLEASE let me know as this is a hugely complicated history and a history that is only 20-years old! |
