Brownells was out of stock on the springs last week. I had to order them directly from Wolff. All the spring inserts are the same except for color. I ordered some blue ones from Bushmaster.

oops, nevermind, you do need the black insert

Wolff's web site says to use the spring with the black insert from Colt

EXTRACTOR SPRINGS - Extra Power
These very strong extractor springs eliminate the extraction problems which are very common in M4 models used extensively in law enforcement. Springs should be used in combination with the new BLACK extractor spring insert available from Colt. Springs also recommended for the M-16, AR-15 & Sporters.  Springs are unground and we do not recommend grinding them.

I couldn't find the black inserts on the Brownell's site either so I just ordered the Wolff springs.  The instructions state that stock insert should be used.

The Back and blue are the same.  The reference on Wolffe's ite is to help people that already have the black insert. ie. "If you have that insert, you'll want to replace your spring w/ this one"
The only difference in buffers is color, that's been discussed here before.  The difference is used to designate spring rates only.

But if you want to use the same method for your own purposes, ie. Bk w/ M4 extractor spring, Blu w/ others, then follow this link to SAW LE Sales
.  It's under "Colt rifle parts"  then scroll down.

Hope it helps.

I wrote Wolff about this over a year ago.  The blue and black inserts are the same. According to Colt, they use the black to ID the heavy duty SPRINGS for the armed forces, because armorer replacement units are packaged w/the spring and insert in the same bag.

Now, there is a Colt distributor who swears the black inserts ARE stiffer, so you can decide who is right; the distributor or the factory.

Bottom line: I have six Wolff springs in six different uppers, with five BLUE inserts, and one RED insert..  Every one of these assemblies works just fine.  In fact, on the three uppers I have w/the hump on the side, the ejected empties just barely touch the very outer tip of the hump; so I don't have a big , ugly brass stained piece to clean off

Now, if you insist on scrounging for the black units, more power to you---but you really don't need them
