Do Colt M4s and M4A1s come from the factory with a heavier extractor spring?  Or is this some aftermarket modification?

My Colt 6400c came with the HD spring and black insert.  I'm not sure about the real M4s.

Speaking of the HD spring and black insert, where can a guy purchase them? I know that SAW sells them, but if I remember correctly, they have a $50 order minimum. I've got a registered M16 in an M4 configuration, but my original Colt M16 bolt has the old-style spring with the red insert. I probably should update it.

SAW is the only place that I know of but I saw CMMG has a not bolt rebuild kit that comes with a HD spring and an o-ring...maybe worth a try?

You can use either an O ring or the Defender.  Crane consideres them interchangable and supplies both to units, depending on what is on hand at the moment.

What is a spring and insert worth?

Which work just fine w/the old blue insert. At laeast all four of mine do

Speaking of red inserts, all the pieces that have come out of CDNN that I've seen comments on seem to have that red one----and I've never seen nor heard of a red insert before that batch from CDNN.  Does anyone have any info on the origin/date of those things.  I know white was first, then blue.  Was red an intermidiate between blue and black?

On a hunch I put the red insert, w/the Wolff spring into my class 3 XM177E2 11.5 inch barrel clone, which historially bounces empties off my right ear muff (I'm left handed) last week.  Not an ear muf clang all day, so it does something different than the blue one

SAW sells the HD spring for $4 and the black insert for $1.50. The inserts are all really the same, only color-coded to show the tension of the spring.

Remember the blue and black insert differ in color only. The black is used to identify the heavier spring. I just ordered springs directly from Wolff and blue inserts from Bushmaster to replace the springs and orange inserts in a bunch of older Colt bolt assemblies.

Strange, the spring with black insert comes as a package deal thru DOD channels.  The D/O ring comes seperate.

To mix things up even more- Colt now makes a beefier extractor spring than the black one- The new one is bronze and has a black insert as before

And according to Crane you only need the O/D ring if you have a M4A1
