I bought a Bushy lower from a guy awhile back and just now got around to putting an upper on it to give it a try.  It appears that the meat head I got the lower from took the hammer catch off of it maybe trying to make it FA.  Now I have the problem that I know has been discussed at length that when I hold the trigger and pull the charging handle the notch on the hammer catches on the firing pin.  My question is what is the best fix?  Should I file the notch on the hammer, get the smaller AR pin ( it looks like my bolt has the bigger M-16 firing pin ), or should I get the hammer catch replaced.  It seems I have seen post where even with the hammer catch this problem has happened.

When you say hammer catch do you mean disconector or the part of the hammer that cathes the disconector?if its the part the makes disconector contact and its shaved off the hammer needs replacing.M16 firing pins have a larger collar and can hang up on the hammer get an AR pin first and please describe the hammer catch as I cannot pictire what you mean.Hold the trigger pull back the bolt release trigger you should hear a click if not the disconector is not making hammer contact.when you sya hammer catch do you meant the hook thats on the end of a full auto hammer if so that shouldnt impede function.Notched hammers are usualy always semi auto so the only other part that can be said is a hammer catch would be the rear hook the disconector grabs as it cycles and drops to the trigger sear surface.

If he has removed the hook on the hammer that engages the disconnector, (back side of the hammer, half way down) the simplest cure is a new hammer.  Leaving it like it is, (if that's the problem) is not safe. Most likely the hammer will just follw the carrier down until the notch on the top of the hammer catches the firing pin and jams. BUT it IS possible that you could get a "double' or worse yet an Out Of Battery Discharge, or "Ka-Boom."

Replace the hammer. (Again, if I'm understanding your description of the problem.)

Sorry for the confusion, the little hook on the back of the hammer is still there it has not been filed off.  The disconnector that is supposed to catch on that hook is missing.  The top of the trigger assembly where that is supposed to be has nothing on it.  Like I said I have the larger M-16 style firing pin, will just putting an AR firing pin in fix the problem.  It seems to shoot fine but I am worried that if it hangs up a few times while shooting I will start bending the firing pin retainer.

If your using the newer shrouded AR15 bolt carrier (that uses the M16 firing pin) I would get one of the newer RRA hammers that are not notched like typical AR hammers but they still aren't M16 hammers either.  If I were you I would replace the hammer, sear, trigger with new parts and springs.  Who knows the condition their previous owner.  Pic up a new firing pin retaining pin while your at it, its a good to have.

OK, the disconnector itself is missing.

Easy to replace. Make sure you get the spring, if it too is missing.
