| If and when it drops dead, Does that mean other guns will be shipped to the US that were banned? |
ETA: If I am correct on the executive order on the import of certain weapons, the following may apply: No, that is not it at all. The AWB and the Clinton executive order pertaining to the import of certain weapons are two different things. The sunsetting of the AWB will not affect the executive order. I don't know how an executive order is reversed, but I think a sitting president can reverse it. I am not sure about that though. |

When I hear Import Ban, I think of 1989, Bush Sr, and HK91/93/94, Sig 55x, Valmet's, etc... Clinton did ban the importation of Chinese AK type rifles and SKS-D's I believe. In any event, if the AWB sunsets, there will still be no importing of "non-sporting' weapons. If you were able to play the US parts game it might be different.... |

Yes, an executive order can be cancelled by the same or any following President. In rare cases, executive orders have been followed up by action in Congress to make a law that has the same function as the EO, in which case cancelling the EO will not help as the law is still in effect. In theory, Bush could cancel the import ban EOs at any time. In practice, the only time that could possibly happen is after he's reelected, because then he can't do anything that will affect his chances for a third term....which are zero. Why would he care about pissing off some Democrats by cancelling that EO, then? CJ |

I don't see the import ban going away ever - look at some of the companies that are big Bush supporters like Bushmaster - you think they would be excited about the import ban going away? Then again, Bush did partially reverse the Clinton decision to stop import of all semi-auto parts and allow people to import parts for replacement and repair purposes and that didn't help domestic manufacturers any., so maybe he would consider it. |

Yup, The 89 Import Ban was by Executive Order from Bush I. It will be unaffected by the 94 AWB sunsetting. Still no Daewoos, Valmets (SAKO, now), or others on the list. UNLESS they are made domesticly. Beretta has domestic production facilities, as does FN. HK will soon follow. Whether they will tool up for "Assault Weapons" is a question answered by economics. If they tool up, how much production time would they get before the political winds change AGAIN, and their "new" products are banned again? Before they can amortize their setup costs and show a profit? Their decision making will follow that line of reasoning. Stay Tuned... Lonny |
