That is a common question. (A3 vs A4) When some commercial manufacturers of AR rifles came out with flat tops, they called them A3 models, as opposed to the exsisting A1 and A2 carry handle versions. (Armalite does use the A4 designation on flat tops) Relating to the 20" M16 - When the US military issued flat tops, they were called the A4. The military already had the A1 and A2 carry handle designations, and the M16A3 was the same as a M16A2, except it was full auto, as opposed to burst. So as it was said above - for the commercial market A3=A4. |
