OK, I'm new to the AR-15 world, and trying to learn as much as possible.....so be gentle.
What's the difference between an A2 rifle, and an A4, and etc. Your knowledge would be greatly appreciated in helping out a newbie, and anyting else you might want to share, that would help me in the future, would be even better.....Thanks

A2 has the carry handle built into the upper receiver, the A3/A4 are a "flattop" upper receiver.

Excuse the poor quality of the picture, but the top one is the A2, and the bottom is the A3.

Continuing on the newbie questions, I've looked around abit for a defintion of what the "Blue" label, "Green" label Colts consist of. Is there a definitive place/post that spells out which Colts came with what? Thanks.. Hope I didn't miss it somewhere obvious.

That is a common question. (A3 vs A4)

When some commercial manufacturers of AR rifles came out with flat tops, they called them A3 models, as opposed to the exsisting A1 and A2 carry handle versions.
(Armalite does use the A4 designation on flat tops)

Relating to the 20" M16 - When the US military issued flat tops, they were called the A4.
The military already had the A1 and A2 carry handle designations,
and the M16A3  was the same as a M16A2, except it was full auto, as opposed to burst.

So as it was said above - for the commercial market A3=A4.
