I currently have a 16" A2 upper. When I fire the weapon, every couple of rounds per magazine the empty case gets stuck in the chamber. When I pop the casing out of the chamber with a cleaning rod it shows that the extractor is simply ripping the rim of the case off and that's why it gets stuck (there is nothing for the extractor to grab onto). It does this on the two types of ammo I have fired through it, Federal 55grain .223 and some surplus rounds I was supposed to use at drill (shhhh, don't tell anyone!) I also don't like the muzzle brake on the weapon because it is just too damn loud. It causes my eyes to water because it is so loud and this is with hearing protection on. Now my point, I want an A3 upper. I want to stay with the 16" barrel. My first thought was to simply buy an upper reciever without barrel and work on it and switch the barrel out, or I could just get a new complete upper with barrel. I think this would be the better way to go, it would elevate my problems, and I wouldn't have to worry about taking the muzzle brake off. Does this sound like the way to go? Should I buy Busmaster's 16in V Match Upper? 16in Post Ban V Match Carbine Complete Upper Receiver Is it worth the extra $40 for the free floating handguards? I am going to mount a Reflex sight onto this and I would put flip up sights on it for backup. Or should I just go with a A3 upper with the permanent front sight post? |
| Is the barrel chrome lined?Try a new extractor or an x-power extractor spring. Is it a 5.56 chamber or a match .223 chamber?what condition is the ammo in?who manufactured the upper?and what if any markings are on the barrel past the front sight?a little more info would help get you some good advice before shit canning the upper or barrel, more info please...thanks...927 |

Well, you won't have to worry about removing your brake as long as you are just rebarreling. Now if you want to add a float tube or change out the sight then the brake will have to be removed. The front sight post won't be a problem, just get a mount that lets the dot co-witness with the iron sights. That's my 2 cents anyway... |
Well, it's a Bushmaster Upper, but I had the barrel put on by the guy at American Spirit Arms (doh!) so the barrel is ASA. I got the Bushmaster upper and lower from a friend and it was stripped, no barrel, no bolt or bolt carrier which is all ASA parts. This is before I found out their reputation on this board and I will never go back to them again. To answer your question, it's most likely a .223 chamber but probably not match. The barrel is not chrome lined. The ammo was in excellent condition, brand new right out of the box on all times except for the ammo I got from my Guard unit. It was mostly federal 55 grain ammo that was .223 so using out of spec ammo should not be the issue. I have tried other ammo in it, but 90% of it was Federal. There are no markings on the barrel past the front sight from what I recall. I have a guest sleeping in the room that houses the AR so I will check that tomorrow and will repost. |
