I'll be putting a bipod on that attaches to the handguard. I haven't tried to remove the handguard yet. Is a handguard tool necessary?
Where can I buy one?
Thanks.

AR handguards are designed to removed without tools.  That said the tool can make the job a lot quicker and easier for some.

ETA:  I have seen them for sale in Brownells and Midway.  Probably a lot of other places as well.  I wouldn't spend a lot on one so find the lowest price possible.

I recently saw one acvertised much cheaper than what you normally see at Brownells or Midway.  Maybe Denny's or Eagle Firearms.

I think they are one of the best tools for a AR, get one and you will agree. No more sore fingers.

I hardly ever use mine but when I do choose to remove the handguards that tool is worth it's weight in gold.

I got mine from Bushmaster mainly because some of the less expensive ones looked "cheap" to me.  The BM is very solid and the whole thing is plastic lined with extra-heavy plastic on the contact points.

I recently purchased one from The Sportmansguide.com for under $20.00.

Cheapest  I could find, Happy Hunting!

I was looking at the BM for the same reasons. Thanks for the replys.

You can make your own. Make a Handguard Removal Tool

If you have an assistant, I think the removal tool is a waste. Certainly, if you can do it yourself without, it is a waste.

I own the HRT that Denny sells. It is worth it's weight in gold and is a premium quality tool. It is comparable in quality to the others that sell for $10-$20 more.

I like mine. It does make it easier to get them off and on by yourself.

Handguard tools are for weenies(no offense meant to those that have them). 8 years in the army, over 25 different M16s issued (that I can recall) and I never had to use a tool to remove the handguards. (And I had several brand new A2s issues, so don't give me that "worn in" crap) Just take them off before field stripping anything else, that way the butt of the rifle is firmly on the ground, push down with all your might on the retaining ring, pull out one side of the handguard, from the receiver end, all the while emitting a tremendous grunt, then the other side, and you are done. HOOAH. No weenie tools needed. JUST GET ON DOWN AND GIVE ME 20 IF YOU ARE USING A TOOL TO REMOVE YOUR HANDGUARDS!

I can promise you that NO drill sergeant ever permitted his trainees (not even the female ones) to use a "tool" to remove their handguards. And you should STILL be able to field strip the entire weapon in 60 seconds. Most did it in 30 seconds.

You could, however use the handguard removal tool for lobster thongs or to hang your panties on to dry after washing them.

Despite what the good doctor says, get a handguard tool.   They are invaluable.  Don't hurt your hands/fingers unless you have too.  For the low cost, it is well worth it.

I got the big heavy duty tool from Brownells (I think it was $20),  Its really cool and much easier to put on and take off my YHM 2 pc handguards now without scratching the delta ring.

Wish I'd seen your site before I paid BM's price.

Right here is the original poster's answer.  Great product at VERY good price!

Denny's hand grip removal tool is one of the two items I got on my recent first purchase from Denny.  The order was perfectly smooth with no trouble at all, the tool is great and works exactly as advertised, Denny is friendly and easy to deal with, and his price can't be beat.  Obviously, I am adding another vote to getting the tool and getting it from Denny.

Here is the exact link to the tool on Denny's site, but don't forget to look around at everything else he offers while you are there.  You might find some more goodies.  I also bought a LULA and am quite happy with it too.

As for whether or not you even need a handguard removal tool at all, my point of view is that you can get the handguards off without it, but why go through the fight and risk damaging something by slipping while applying so much force?  Besides, even the Army's official TM 9-1005-249-10 manual recommends the two-person "buddy" system for removing hand guards:

Think of the tool as your "buddy" when you don't actually have someone else around.  Besides, would you rather do this:

Or this:
