Considering some people pay more for optics than they do for their entire rifle...

IMHO, yes.

I have one mounted on the side of my scope for the close in hoser stuff.  I love it.

WOWOWOWOWOWOW That is awesome... I was thinking of doing that too!  I heard the jpoint was a handgun scope, so i was wondering about recoil and shock.  Does it hold zero??? What is the reticle???

TCROW:
Couple questions about your rig:
1) how'd you mount the JPoint to the side of your scope like that?
2) when using the JPoint, do you just look through it "sideways" or do you cant the gun?

chapperjoe:
The JPoint should be able to handle the "recoil" of a .223 rifle with no problems; it's designed as a handgun scope yes, but it's designed to ride the slide of a semi-auto pistol, which would generate more G-forces than the gentle shove of an AR.  Reticle is a single red/orange dot, either 4 or 8 MOA size depending on which model of sight you choose.

Thanks for the complement. Its actually an Optima (same as John G's Jpoint).  I have it sighted in a 50 yards so as I move in on targets the POI moves down and at point blank its about 3 inches low.  Its held its zero for 2 years now and is still on its first battery.  At 50 yards off a rest I can shoot about a 1" group with it.

I made the mount by modifing the weaver base mount that comes with the site so a scope ring would clamp on it, then just clamped the scope ring to the scope and put the site base in the bottom of the ring.  Make sense?

To see the dot you just need to cant the gun a few degrees and its there at the same whight as the scope.  That way you don't have to readjusts your head on the stock.  I've seen a few red dots out on the handguard but they are on a differnt plane than the primary optic so you have to move your head a bunch to see through it.  This is much easier to use.  You'd think the objective lens on the scope would get in the way but with both eyes open you don't even noticce it and mine's a 50mm.
