I just have a general question about the AR-15.  Is it possible to make these things fire automatically or in burst mode?  People at my work are asking me but I don't know the answer?  I think I saw something once that said it's not possible only an M16 can do that.  If that's the case, I thought the AR and the M16 were basically one in the same.

Thanks you all for your time.

Sincerely,

Jeff

I don't plan on doing it.  I don't want to be that guy who ruins it for everyone else.  I like my AR just the way it is.  Well maybe I'd like it more if it a tatical light, bi-pod, an ACOG, and other toys like that.

Thanks for your reply.

Sincerely,

Jeff

An AR15 rifle cannot be turned into a closed-bolt automatic weapon without extra fire control parts.  Once you add extra fire control parts, it's no longer an AR15.

Asking a political question?  I'll give a political answer:

No, it is not possible without an extensive machine shop and/or some very expensive and strictly controlled parts.

The AR is no different than any other weapon - they can be converted illegally or legally.  If one were to do it illegally, then I wish them a nice visit to the federal pen.

Thanks everyone for your replies.  I do have one more question, how can these be converted legally?

It is going to cost a lot, and require some paper work from the BATF.  Other than that, you better check the Class 3 forum over here: ARFCOM MG FORUM

They can not be converted legally in MI; we are a Curio and Relic only Class III state; that means the only MGs we can own were ones manufactured before a certain date, which I can not recall off the top of my head.  In any case, they still must have been registered before the 1986 ban, otherwise you're looking at a lot of prison time and $$$$ fine.
