What is the best way to determine if a used AR has a chrome lined bbl or not?  Is it as simple as looking down the bbl with the bolt open, or is there a better method?

You'll see a bright silvert ring around the rear edge of the chamber, if it's chrome lined. There will also be a similar, but smaller ring around the muzzle end.

If you see such a ring, but aren't sure if it's chrome or just worn off finish, put a dab of instant bluing on it. If it is chrome, it won't take the blue. If it's bare steel, the bluing will darken it.

If it's a Colt barrel, it will be marked "C  MP B" or "C  MP CHROME BORE".  If it's only marked "C MP" it's not lined, and if it's marked "C  MP C" only the chamber is chromed.

Hope this helps
