I am planning (read saving) to build a SHTF AR.  So far the rig I have envisioned will be my Colt lower mated to my Colt upper with a bushmaster 16” chrome-lined fluted H-bar (I know many of you will disagree with my barrel selection, but that’s what I want).  I will have an EOTech on top with BUISs of course.  For those, I am looking at the ARMS 40 (L maybe) and not sure yet what gas-block/front site combo.  But my main point is I can’t decide to get free-float handgaurds or not.  I understand the accuracy advantage of FF and the accessorizing advantage (weight of stuff on handgaurds not barrel), but all I want to put on is a vertical grip and a not so big flashlight (4-7oz).  I just can’t see FF being practical in a SHTF scenario because what if you drop your rifle in the mud…you have to get out your tools and remove the front sight just to remove the damn hnadguards to clean it! That just doesn’t add up to me.  So the bottom line is, would I need the FF to mount the accessories I mentioned above, or would I be fine with the Yankee Hill 2-piece aluminum handgaurds that feature rails and mount like standard handguards?

I am open to all suggestions and opinions.

Thanks.

since it is a SHTF setup, hope you are going to stock lots of battieries

ok... well you acually are starting off a lot better than some people on this forum (in my mind)

but to address your handguard issue... i'd look into rails of some sort... the Daniels Defense carbine FF are very light handguards and will allow you to upgrade your weapon...  a tactical light and vertical grip are things that can add a lot to your effectiveness of your weapon...

as for your gas block... get a fixed FSP... the bells and whistles are more of a hassel than anything and if you are using a red dot you should co-witness...  if you were using an acog i'd say get the pri or a GG&G flip up front sight post...

i wouldn't get YHM FF... and if you don't want to spend the money for rails get standard handguards...  as for FF... i don't think it offers much to the SHTF situation.... but hey... if your going with handguards i don't think its a problem... for me personally i didn't want to go away from my barrel nut/delta ring... so I went with RASII... which is FF... but if it wasn't i wouldn't have minded...  my barrel can perform... it is submoa so if i need to make an accurate shot i know that my handguards aren't going to interfear with my down range punishment (aka shots)...

i think a 16" fluted h-bar bm barrel is a great choice... hopefully BM will flute your barrel deeply (for weight purposes)   i opt'd for a gov. profile m4 conture barrel for my barrel... but i think a fluted h-bar is fine... keeping the barrel weight in the 2.75lbs and below range i think is what you want for an all around weapon...

lemme know if you have any other issues you wish to descuss...

chewbacca.... i am quite proud of you for not buying your weapon and then finding out what you want to do with it...

DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME

dont' rush into it... think about all the parts you want to add to your weapon and then buy them all at once...  and remember all the parts have a purpose... since your weapon is a SHTF weapon.... keep that theme in your head the whole way through...

look into RRA...  for your hardware... you can piece all your parts together at ADCO and then send them your BM barrel...  or something... i'm sure Steve and Eric will help you out....

Thanks guys, but there has got to be more opinions out there...COME ON GUYS. I need to know what you all think anout the FF HGs, specically the situation I laid out. And also what about the YHM 2 piece HGs, with the accessories I mentioned.  Lastly, are there any FF HGs out there that dont require removal of front site and can be disassembled with out tools?

Thanks.

Drop your rifle in the mud?  WHy take the handguard off - just wash it with a hose or in a stream.

Free float if you want to,otherwise go with a standard RAS.

4 AA batteries and a solar recharger and you're good to go for a very long time.

I would go with a Aimpoint over the Eotech for the sole reason that is has a much longer battery life.  If it is SHTF you don't want to have to worry about carrying lots of batteries around.  Aimpoint would reduce that amount.

JMO
YMMV

ACOG, no batteries.
For SHTF, A4gery with ACOG and a rail mounted sure-fire.

YHM makes a "specter" quad rail FF forearm
secure.valinet.com/~yankeeh/cgi-bin/web_store/web_store.cgi?page=forearmkits.html&&cart_id=2699777_7643
I have it on one of my AR's.

For $100 more than the 2 piece model, you get a FF tube, low profile gas block (which is covered by the FF tube) , and the front BUIS.
If you get the lightweight model, the holes are so big you could scoop the mud out with your fingers in your given scenario

It's a midlength tube, and they offer a front BUIS that mounts on top of the rail on the FF tube, cowitnesses just fine with an EOTech.

That, plus a tango down vertical grip and a small surefire (951SU) and I'm quite happy with my setup.

My $0.02

My setup:

16" HBAR
YHM 2pc Rails
SF/Leupold Light
ARMS #40

Accurate enough to plink clays at 200yds and fairly light....for an HBAR, that is.

New4John and Calvert1 those are sweet set-ups! Calvert1, how do you like those HGs, downward pressure on the front grip when shooting isn't enough to detract from accuracy?. Any info you could provide would be much appreciated. The thing with the FFs is I don’t like the idea that you can’t take them off in the field. I like tool-less disassembly on all my guns. Although someone mentioned the RAS, as a full-time college student I definitely can't rationalize the cost of those, though they are sweet. I like the idea of a solar powered charger...NICE...didn't think about that!

Keep it comin guys!

Maybe I'll add a flashlight but that would become disposable come SHTF.  I like to keep it as simple as possible and this about reaches the limit of simple

Knights M4 RAS
Trijicon Reflex
ARMS #40
Aimpoint w/catilever spacer #22M68

Boom Stick that is one hell of a brake!  Do you really need the higher frontsite post when using the ARMS 40?

Thats the "eggbeater" brake. Comes standard on all comped Colts.  Very effective BTW!
When I switch between carry handle and #40 my Red dots are in the same position (when looking through irons) and don't need adjustment.
