Hello everyone,

I just purchased my first AR-15.  I picked up the Bushmaster XM15E2S, seems like a very nice gun, I got it for $825.00 new; I thought it was a good price.

Is there anything I should know about this gun or this style of gun?  Specifically about cleaning, shooting, storing, etc...?  Any modifications or upgrades I sould be looking at?

Other guns I own:
Sig P229 .40 S&W
Desert Eagle .50AE
Mossberg 500 Shotgun

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Jeff

Don't laugh at the new guy

What he's trying to get out despite not being able to breath due ot laughter is there's more accessories than you can throw a brick at.

Congrats BTW

Welcome aboard!

The only problem with this board is that I end up spending my money on things I really don't need.  But so is life.

The AR15 is very addictive. I have owned quite a few, but my staples are the following:
Preban Bushmaster M4
Preban Eagle Arms A2
Colt 6700 A4gery in progress.

The rest is whatever you can afford.

Good luck

Max

Great first AR.

Now, get some magazines.  Stick with USGI and you'll be okay.

BTW, welcome to the site!

Things to know:  USA brand mags as well as all blued steel mags are junk.  You need to know how to pull the bolt out of the carrier and properly clean and lube it.  I also suggest you learn what are the do's and donts of preban/postban rifles.   Also get the USMC manual on the M16, it will have alot of useful information.  For mags buy a nice assortment of USGI 20's and 30's.  I realize some folks will ask why bother with 20's?  Simple, buy some and see for yourself.  Nice mags...they're quiet, easy to shoot prone from, heck you should ask yourself...why buy a 30?  ;)

Yeah, stick to the USGI mags, 20 or 30rders. Stay away from USA...and have fun!

Thanks everyone for the replies and welcoming me to your forum.  I know that there are many accessories for the AR-15 I guess I was looking for more specific ones that people think are a must have.  For example, when I got my desert eagle people told me to get the hogue grip, I am glad I did, it makes it feel a lot better.

I just broke her down and cleaned it all out, pretty easy to take down.  I would like to know how much oil to keep on the moving parts.  For my other guns I apply the oil to a patch cloth, wipe the component doyn than take a clean dry cloth and wipe the component down again so soak up some of the lose oil.  Will this work for the AR-15 too?

Thanks again.

Sincerely,

Jeff

These forums area agreat place to learn.  I learned so much about my Desert Eagle on a post just about them, it was great.  Additionally, I noticed that these forums are some of the most, if not the most patriotic sites on the net!  It's great to see some many people stand behind this country of ours!

Sincerely,

Jeff

good first AR... i'd look into a tactical light from surefire or some type of optic.... either aimpoint, eotech or something from trijicon (hence acog)

Welcome to the addiction!
I have a few words of advice from my low-budget addiction experience.

Ammo is #1 for me, what good is having all the mods in the world if you can't shoot a LOT. :)
Buy QUALITY ammo, i havent shot any wolf because av arms says it voids the warrenty but i haven't had much of a problem using xm193 exclusively.  Its hot, accurate and reliable, so why not spend a bit more?

Quality magizines are also required, don't go cheap on this area or the ammo area.  USGI's or those brit steel mags-SA-80 (what i use) are great.

Optics, well i wanted one but didn't have the cash to buy what i really wanted(aimpoint) so i bought the sight recommended to me by the people who sold me my gun(cav arms), the OKO red dot sight.  Its a great product, only advantage an aimpoint has over it is durability.  The dots look identical when i compared them(my eyes suck, so neither are perfect).  I also bought LMT BUIS.  If the OKO went down in a SHTF situation i wouldnt really worry much, i am more than comfortable with the irons, and actually do most of my shooting with them.

I do a lot of distance shooting with irons(out to 400 yards) from the prone, so naturally i bought a harris bipod.  It was a great investment.

I bought my gun for $650, OKO was a tad under 200, bipod and adapter was 70 bucks, LMT buis are 100. so for under $1,100 , i think my setup is pretty sweet

Here is a picture.

If you've got the cash you need an ACOG.    There was a post awhile back with images of all the different sight and types of ACOGs and some of the other electronic sights as well.  I wish I'd have bookmarked it as the search function wont be much help.  I particularly liked the illuminated triangle, cant remember which one that was..

I just got a Bushmaster A3 16" carbine.  I added a carry handle mount and millet reddot I had.  I don't have have much experience with ARs, and worried that the barrel would be too long.  But it's just fine.  I don't think you wouldn't gain much extra manueverability going shorter, but would lose lots of velocity, and the legal hassle isn't worth it.  I will be getting a collapsable stock later on, as the standard one is way too long for everything except prone shooting, unless you are tall.

My Bushmaster looks/feels hi-quality.  I really feel like I got my $769 worth.
