| I was at wal-mart this morning in the gun dept. I seen a plastic kit with screw driver bits and some torx bits.It was made by pachmayer.I would like to get a set like this but a more expensive kit.Are the slotted screws on a gun require a special bit? Can anybody tell me where to look for such a kit? Thanks for all replies!!!!!!!! |

The important thing is to make sure the screwdriver bits are hollow ground. This is so that when torque is applied they do not force themselves out of the slot, possibly marking the screw and your pride. They also fit better and allow for more torque. With so many expensive guns I got the master (Magna tip) set from Brownells. This way I can select a screwdrive blade bit that perfectly fits the slot. It's worth it to me in many cases and I get much, much use out of the kit. I also have the Torx, Allen, and other special bits. Brownells also offers a few specialty bits for certain guns. In the case of AR's for example, on of the special bits is the stock screw (extra large). I think it was money very well spent. I think another popular set is the Chapman brand. Most times screwdrivers are offered as "Gun Smith Screwdrivers" with the simply fact that they are hollowground, but not always and it's important to check. That Pachmayer set you mentioned are most likely hollow ground. The Brownells Magna tip set comes with a variety of tool handles to choose from, as well as I think 3 different levels with each adding more bits and the optional storage case (I recommend that option). I also then added some of the specialty bits as mentioned in their AR Tools kit set, and also I added the thin bit set (popular with European guns is the extra thin slotted screws), as well as an extended bit for buttpads/stocks and more. It's the finest screwdriver bit set that I have personally run across. |
