A local shop has a colt hbar elite  flat top with a 24 inch hbar elite Stainless barrel used but not abused. They are asking 950 but would come down a hair. I am a newbie thinking of building an inexpensive AR varmint . Even a cheap kit and lower  will cost around 750 with shipping and ffl fees. Is the used Colt worth 200 more? This will be my first AR. I like the look of a reqular 20 inch but I do like to shoot distances (that is the reason I wanted a varmint).  I am having trouble deciding on which one to bulid, because if I like it I can see me tring a match or two. I will just be real happy to have any configuration. My reason for asking about the Colt is resale value incase I decide to up grade. I just spoke with the prior owner, he said it would do 1/2 inch MOA and he shot it about 300 rounds. What If I could get it for 800 or 850 does that make a diffrence? Could I have the barrel cut down to 20"?

Its only worth it if they dont sue you for calling it an "M4" should you decide to change it
Honestly though it depends on your wants and needs for 950 you could get a new 6400C M4 colt unless you want the varmint type then it depends on the condition. In the end its up to you, what is the intended purpose for the rifle?and what are your expectations and needs?then go from their and weigh every thing..price,parts compatability..Give us just a little more info on how you are going to use it and the shape its in.If your going to keep it as a dedicated varmint rifle then it sounds pretty good it its in real good shape.

You can buy a Colt CR6724 Elite brand new for around $1100. Does this used one come with any extras like rings, optics etc?

No, it has been striped of optics and rings. The lower says 5.56 and barrell says 223.

No better than many others you can get for that price, or cheaper, new.

Look around the EE here, then www.gunbroker.com and www.auctionarms.com and www.gunsamerica.com to get a feel for prices.

If it's in excellent shape it's a decent price. I just ordered a new one for $1098 from my local FFL. I'm greatly looking forward to receiving mine. One of my shooting buddies owns one and the fit and finish is second to none-I've been eyeing his for quite a while. I was originally going to go with the RRA varmint, but I liked the features of the Colt better. In my eyes it was worth the few extra bucks over the others.

I just picked up my new Colt 6700 on Thursday 28Apr04  Took it all apart cleaned it up and brought it to the range today Saturday 01 May.    All I can say is this:

Damn, That  thing is really nice.

I own ArmaLites and DPMS' and the Colt and ArmaLite are on the Same page as far as fit, and shootability
